So does anyone know from previous experience if an aftermarket exhaust will void the factory warranty?

I'm just contacting you to enquire about how adding an aftermarket muffler to my recently purchased motorcycle (FZ6N) will effect its factory warranty.
Are there any issues I should be aware of when doing this, do you have a list of accepted exhausts that can be added without problems (warranty wise) and could this in any way void my warranty?
While on this subject, could I just ask whether adding a aftermarket air filter, or a power commander (or similar product) would effect the factory warranty?
Thanks for your time,
Kris
Dear Kris,
The fitment of aftermarket accessories to a Yamaha bike would not normally
void warranty. However in the event an aftermarket product directly
resulted in the failure of a component then that failure would not be
covered by warranty.
For example the fitment of after market exhaust system, air filter and
power commander would change engine performance and loading
characteristics. Should this modification lead to an engine failure then
that failure would not be covered by warranty. If a failure is related to a
manufacturing defect, then it will still be covered by warranty (within the
warranty period).
Unfortunately we do not have a list of approved aftermarket products
(exhaust system).

Ok here is the response:
My dealing with Yamaha direct has been better than with the dealer.
She has responded in a timely and interesting fashion.
I can see 2 points.
1. Using an after market exhaust won't void your warranty if the part or parts that fail are a result of manufacture/install defect. ie when the bike was put together
2. If Yamaha believe that the warranty defect is a result of your modification, your warranty for that claim may be voided. In my view, each claim would have to be taken on its merit.
Now if for example you blew your motor, I would put the factory pipes back on before trucking it back to the dealer for warranty repair. This avoids any costly confusion.
If on the other hand you notice a defect on the bike in no way related to the exhaust, head for the dealer regardless.
I would keep a copy of this email from Yamaha.
I have found dealing with them is better than dealing with the bike shop.
Infact, they have a database of all new Yamaha FZ6's sold at head office.
It was how I found out the dealer was lieing to me.
Well done.
