I remember learning about the earth's magnetic polarity in college. It has reversed (north and south swap) a few times in a the history of the earth. I believe they realized this when they studied the metallic content in rocks/the earth's crust and it's orientation, or it's orientation of magnetism. I remember the concept because it was surprising to me at the time.
