Painting Windshield

Ok I dont want to buy a puig screen b/c I dont like how they are taller (yes, even the racing ones) So I figured i'll just paint my stock one b/c I have seen some nice looking ones.

I bought some Dupli-Color black "Auto Spray" anyone have any suggestions. I have heard I can use this stuff on the windshield if I do it right.

Paint the inside of the screen as the paint will get chips etc if you do the outside. Just use some very fine sandpaper on the side you are going to paint first to get the paint to stick better. Also, use masking tape to protect the side you don't want to get paint on. Then do a couple of coats of paint. Then let it dry for a day and do a couple of coats of clear coat to make it last longer.

I'm doing mine this week. I cut the top off first though. Then I sanded and masked it off. I'm going to use Plastikote gloss black to paint it. I'll post details when I've done it.

I didn't sand mine, and used plastic specific paint. Came out perfect.
I used flat black, but it still looks glossy from the front....

One suggestion; make sure you take you time masking off the other side. It will make the biggest difference in making the final product look good. Oh yeah, do VERY light coats, about 5 min between. I did 4 coats.

I painted mine a few months ago because I ride tucked more often than not, and do not like the height or shape of the puig racing screens.

I used Krylon Fusion Black High Gloss (made for plastic surfaces) spray paint from walmart. Found it for $5. I did no sanding at all. You want to paint the inside of the screen. I made sure to clean with soap and water and a SOFT towel. Try not to get oils from your fingers on the inside surface as you will see it on the final product.

I placed newspaper on the outside of the screen and masked off the innermost lip of the screen - leaving the rounded outside edge clear. I propped it up against a bucket with a newspaper backdrop and went at it.

Put on EXTREMELY light coats, leaving it to dry for 5 - 10 minutes in between. Repeat (I did 7 or 8 coats). A coat or 2 of clear coat won't hurt, but isn't necessary. You should know though, the windscreen will be opaque when you are done.

Unless you ride tucked in the ****pit, chin touching the tank - it shouldn't be a problem. I ride laying on my tank almost every day and see perfectly right above the screen.

Also forget about a tank mount for your camera.

That is so sexy. Wow. . . You get those rearsets painted and flush smoked turn signals for the front and you have yourself a mostly murdered out sex mobile. lol. Thanks for the info that looks amazing.

You cut the top off? As in you shortened the windscreen?

I've been thinking about doing this... how exactly did you go about it and do you have pictures?

Give me a couple of days - still painting, then discovering dust in it and sanding and painting again! My garage needs a clean! Today will be the third painting session.

I took off as much as I could with my dremel so it's level with the top of the fairing pretty much. I wanted a cool airflow on my chest for the summer. Then I'm gonna put my Puig double-bubble when it gets colder.

Definitely paint the inside of the windscreen and use either auto paint or plastic=specific paint for best results. if you are feeling creative, try putting a design into the windscreen. this is what i did to mine a couple summers ago. a tree then fell on my bike and the silver came off, so now it is just the blue she-devil.

i did both sides of mine with a flat black rustoleum brand spray paint meant for plastics, then took a little skull design thing stencil that came with the metallica box set that ive had for so many years its scary, and did that on the front with red. was never a fan of the shiny screen. just got dirty and looked scratched all the time. ya know, screw it. its a windscreen. its cheap and if you screw it up i'm sure you could get a stock replacement from someone on here for cheap to try again. go nuts. :cheer:

Do you have more pics of your bike (from the side and such) without the mirrors on. That was also something I have been looking at is taking them off but I wasnt sure. Yours is the first i've seen with them off.

I made the blockoff plates out of plexiglass because you cant fine real block off plates for the bike.

Seriously though the bike looks damn nice! Lots of nice touches making the whole thing look damn nice! I can't believe how different the bike looks without the gigantic mirrors. I kind of like the super-fly look of it with them though. :thumbup:

Yeah I came across that problem so I have a mount I made for the camera to go on the lower side of the bike which gives it a closer feel to the ground.

Its kind of funny cause it looks like a little gun.

Most of it is because of the decal in the front and I took a dermal tool to the windscreen and shaped it to my favor.

Oh and the Girlfriend was happy on the bike
