Chain moves in neutral?

After cleaning the chain this weekend I noticed that in neutral my wheel was spinning. I couldn't find anything in the forums but maybe I was searching the wrong terms. Is this normal? Does something need to be adjusted?

On the center stand in neutral the rear wheel will slowly spin a bit. Once the engine is warm it will stop.

Thanks. I hadn't noticed it before but the bike was probably warm when I put it up.

I've had that happen a couple times, it's normal.
Usually if you pull in the clutch or shift it'll stop.

I've noticed it too, and have been assured it's normal.

I still can't figure out WHY it does it (?)

the reason it does it is simply this:

Oil is viscous.

So internally when the engine is turned on and things are moving, the oil is capable of moving the pistons etc via all the gears in the clutch...things are in neutral so everything should be free moving in there.

Thats the mystery behind it all...nothing more complicated then that!

Scorp's right, it's all about the oil... specifically, the oil bath that the clutch and gearbox sit in. Even though there's no actual direct metal to metal transmission of power, the spinning input shaft of the gearbox move the oil which applies a little bit of torque to the output shaft, turning the rear wheel.

It's more noticable when cold as the oil is thicker and more "gloopy", when it's hot and runnier it stops doing it.

if you want to do a basic experiment in your kitchen if you're still not convinced....grab some oreo cookies.....take apart a couple of oreo's eat the creamy centres and replace the cream filling with maple syrup and give the top one a turn or two and watch the bottom ones reaction....spins with it huh? thats the same idea with the oil in your clutch plates....

it's lunch time...can you tell I'm hungry for oreo's?

So the tire spins because of disgusting food combinations... thats all I really needed to know. Going to go check my headlight fluid and muffler bearings.
