K&N drop in filter?

Hey folks,

I'm a 2 day newbie with my new 08' FZ6, and I was trying to find a thread
here about the replacement K&N filter for the bike. They've always served
well in the cruisers I've had, but a parts guy at the place I bought it from
said they've had some trouble with them in some sport bikes.
Anyone have experience with this?

Not really sure what issues your refering to :confused:....I have never heard of a problem relating to the FZ6/K&N marriage but i guess there has be one eventually , i run a BMC filter and have never had an issue and they are pretty much the same thing :D...

First TROY welcome to the Forum, you will find a great big bunch of guy's and gal's out here and anyone will give you advise or pointers, now back to your question. I have an 07 and putting the K&N filter with the air box mod made a little big difference (if that make sense). With the 07's and 08's our computers are different, so they compensate for A/F ratio so with the mod done you will feel a difference and hear won as well. There is only one problem......:needpics:
 
I just bought one as well for my '06 from the dealer. Got one for my Jeep and I can tell a bit of a difference. Congrats on the bike..I bought mine as my first bike and its been great! For those that already have the filter, any ideas on the difference between stock and the K&N?

What kind of jeep? I've got a K&N intake kit(full replacement) on my WJ and it made a huge difference, especially in sound and throttle response.


I've also got the K&N filter on my FZ6 and I noticed some improvements all around too.
The stock filter, like all vehicles is pretty basic and restrictive. The K&N/BMC improve airflow, plus with the K&N you simply clean/oil it when it gets dirty.
 
Huh...well, I haven't taken any pics of it yet, but I will. I've only got 17 miles
on the clock, so I haven't really done anything at all with it, except take all
the reflectors off. Gotta get that sticker off the tank somehow too.

Anyway, I also noticed what looks like an O2 sensor after the catalytic
strangler. Is this correct? Does that then make it unnecessary to get a
PC III or other fuel controller if pipes and stuff are put on?

Yeah, the free breathing filters worked great on my cruisers. This parts guy
at the dealer was saying that even on the dyno they couldn't tune out some
pop and hesitations with a K&N filter in, and returning to stock fixed it.
I've heard that before from a couple cruiser guys too, but I've never had a
problem. In fact, on the bike I just traded for the Fizzie6, which was a
VTX 1800, I had the forward facing intake hanging out in the wind. I had
not one problem.

Oh, and what is this airbox mod I saw on one of the posts?

'01 Cherokee Sport. I just bought the drop-in replacement. Was a B@(*! getting it to fit into the airbox right..it was an exact fit. Literally had to hold down the edges with the sealer, but went in all right. Made a bit of a difference..i can hear the air flowing through it too, whereas the old one i couldn't tell.
 
If you use the search tool and type in air box mod in the how to area you'll get a significant amount of results. In laymens terms it's just hacking the front off of the air box lid... Helps flow and sounds louder (supposedly, I haven't done it yet). As for the comp adjusting itself... What about disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes or so for the computer to reset? It'll be groggy when it first wakes up, but when it figures out what's going on, it seems to help.
 
I cannot see whatthe problem would be.

But I also don`t think you really need a K&N filter unless you are going down the new exhaust and power commander road. Just take the stock one out once a season and blow it through gently with an air gun and your as good as new.

Hey Steve, eventually I'll be going down the pipes & fuel controller
direction if I really like this bike...and can resist the urge to trade up
to the FZ1:D...but the reason for the immediate swap is that I can't
stand any paper filtering products. It's just wasteful, and I think they're
just not that great. K&Ns have gone into everything I ride/drive.
I'm not looking for much power out of it, just a way to avoid the extra
cost over time.

as far as that sticker, i think that should be the first 'mod' anyone does. don't try to just pick at it, you will never win that way. best thing to do is let it sit in the sun for a little bit, then rub some WD-40 or some bug and tar remover into it, then gradually and carefully it will come off. take a clean towel to rub the stuff in, and at the same time the towel will act as a light abrasive to get the sticker off. just make sure its clean and doesn't have any particles in it... don't want to scratch the tank! have a little patience with it and that sticker will be history :thumbup:
 
Unfortunately yes, but that was two years ago now. Was wearing full gear, but still had a twisted knee and ankle that put me on crutches for a month and physical therapy afterward. At least I wasn't a :squid: though, because I would have been in much worse shape.
 
Wow...yeah, that would have been worse. After about 25+ years of riding,
I find that this bike is tempting me to go faster way too much. This bike
is actually exhilarating to ride. I mean, my VTX 1800 was a trip and all, but
this bike just brings the riding experience to a whole 'nother level. I know it's
not an R6 or anything, but sheesh. I swear, the more it breaks in (I'm just over
100 miles now) the faster it seems to be.

Anyway, got off on a tangent. Glad you're okay now, and still riding, right?

The sticker...yeah, had patience, used WD40...still scratched up the brand
new bike. I absolutely HATE those stickers. Same thing happened on the
VTX. It came off a little easier, but in the right light I could still see where it
was. Dang. I can never have a pristine tank on a bike...ever. I hope I don't
always see it now while I'm riding. I suppose I could have someone fix the
clear coat. It's not super bad, but I can see the surface scratches.

I have never heard or any problems, other than people complaining about cleaning them because of their location. But even that isnt too bad. If i were you i would go get one. Even if it doesnt give that much of a power boost, you have a lifetime warranty. Cant go wrong with that.:thumbup:

Is this your first sportbike? These bikes tend to make former cruiser riders grin a lot, be cautious, the grin tends to last as long as your on the bike. Dont say i didnt warn ya.:D
