I am looking at noise canceling earbuds for longer rides, does anyone out there use them? Any recommendations?

I use my shure headphones, which are noise cancelling for my horrendously loud helmet wind-noise:) They are GREAT...especially on those wonderful flights where you've got ten children SCREAMING bloody murder behind you. Just hope it's not like my flight home from Germany where the kids were literally in the seat behind you and you can't sleep because you've got the son kicking the seat and the daughter throwing her doll over the back into your lap every fifteen minutes.

Oh...you were talking about motorcycles...yeah...the shure headphones are great. You can get them at Best Buy, internet, or wherever the five-finger discount works.

i use the ZUNE and the earbuds that came with the zune are outstanding!! Great base and fit nicely in my helmet. you can buy just the earbuds at target, bestbuy.

I used to use Koss earbuds, I don't know the model name, but they basically have those squishy ear plugs built right onto them. After a year or two they finally busted and I replaced them with Skull Candy earbuds that have a soft outer coating. Smaller and more comfortable under the helmet, but not as good at cancelling out noise (although better than regular earbuds).

Good luck with your search

I began wearing earplugs when I was commuting an hour one way.
Of course I had Two Bros pipes, so the bike was loud.
then all of a sudden, I quit wearing them. Don't know why, I just didn't want to wear them anymore.
I don't know why I even started wearing them anyway.

The sound of the wind, engine and exhaust note are intoxicating...such a part of the motorcycle experience, that to diminish them would be like cut out parts of a symphony.

and I never want to ride with music. I have all the music I need stored in my cranium. The effect music has over me...anything worth listening to while riding would ultimately result in me grabbing more and more of the right grip. Pushing myself and machine just a little bit further. Driving like an A$$hole more and more. Only two outcomes are possible in this situation: Jail or death.

Not to mention the distraction factor associated with driving with headphones.
In listening to the song, you might be missing something that got pushed out of your attention span.
In a critical situation, the enjoyment of music, I believe, would become a distraction. It would be hard to shut the music out and really focus on evasive action.

I am not soapboxing it, just legitimate concerns.

Ride safe
Don

Well I use these.

They are only $12.32 on Amazon, and are very flexible and do a great job. For motorcycling its perfect and the price is awesome as well.

jvc marshmellows $20.00 at walmart they have ear plug type re-placeable ends that insert in your ears and they sound incredible! you dont even have to turn it up past half volume ever!! and they have bass like sub woofers. I used to put on ear buds, and I also used to use my mp3 earphones (the sony erricson are good) but at some point I thought I was fussing too much so decided to go out and buy the schuberth S1 helmet which I think was a good buy. it does not entirely cancel the noise but it does enough.

By the way sometime back when I had was still using the buds I did not hear a cager coming from my side. It gave me a right fright.

There seems to be some confusion over the differences between noise cancellation and noise isolation/blocking.

Most earbuds now days are the canal type, meaning they insert into your ear canal and block out or isolate you form the outside sounds using a foam or silicone baffle. This is a passive type of noise reduction

Noise canceling is an active form of noise reduction. It involves some sort of mic at the speakers, which feeds to a processor, which sends the outside noise back in to the speaker out of phase to cancel it. They work very differently than regular canal phones.

I have some Sony earbuds which are noise canceling. They work great on planes and other noisy environments. But I've never tried them on the bike, I've only tried regular earplugs a couple of times. Now that my exhaust is louder maybe I'll dig them out and give it a try, they should fit OK in my helmet I think.

I bought skull candy smokin buds on amazon for 12$ and 15$ delivered. They work and they are cheap so when you rip the bud off while removing your helmet you dont even care.

As per dark_isz's advice the Etymotics are the best I've had. The sound quality is great. More importantly they do not come out of your ears once you slip your helmet on.

I use the 6isolator ones.
