Drinking and Riding.

Thanks Steve,

The articles really highlight what we all know. Its selfish stupidity to drink and drive.
One of the interesting parts was the rate that the liver metabolise alcohol.

we have different measures in the UK.

A UK unit is 10ml or 8 grams of pure alcohol. The number of units in a drink depends on what you're drinking. The average person will metabolise 1 unit an hour.
So if you are drinking up to say midnight and you have 10 units in your system when you go to bed (which is about 4 pints of beer, and not a big session) and get up a 06.00. You will still have possibly 2-4 units of alcohol in your system.
I think most of us are responsible when it comes to drinking and riding on the day. A lot of us would be over the limit the day after. This is an area that I think would benefit from rider/driver education.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing. I don't even entertain drinking and riding. I do my drinking at home in the afternoon when I know I'm not going anywhere. If I go to a club or some other social gathering I will drink not alcoholic stuff and watch everyone act the fool.

I just wanted to do an add in to Steve's post,

Last week I met up with my best buddy, I have not been out for beers for about 5 months. Normally my buddy and I would (in my wifes words "Do the dog on it") I was looking forward to basically getting rat ar5ed.
When the evening came I still wanted to met my buddy but did not fancy a weekend of children and hangover.
So I took my bike so I would not drink.

I had a great evening more so because I could remember it lol.

Pubs IMO do not cater for the non drinker, the OJ is like a sweet syrup, more than 3 glasses of coke is 2 more than I enjoy.
What do you guys drink when your out and driving?

Nelly

Good articles!

Nelly - You are right - the bars don't cater to the non-drinker. I usually drink diet 7-up or diet Coke. But - it has gotten pretty expensive to go out and I would much rather spend the money on a decent dinner at home (I like to cook) and a good movie.

I usually just drink one or two cokes when I go out with friends. I only go out to drink if I have someone to pick me up afterwards:D

The bar i was in had a great coffee machine. They would not switch it on as it was only used for lunch time trade. I would rather drink a coffee than a coke

Well, since I am the DD in the house for now, this is something I have thought about quite a bit. It hasn't really been an issue, though, as many friends have small children and most don't drink much anymore. But, I have found that cranberry juice mixed with Sprite (or Ginger Ale) makes a nice "mixed drink" that is safe for me and the little one :) Other than that, I am a water drinker. Never been a huge fan of soda.

Coffee, coca cola, lightly sweetend iced tea and redbull are my favorite drinks. LOL I likey me some caffiene. LOL LOL

I have found that if I drink redbull and ride though the combination of adreniline and what ever is in redbull makes my legs jittery when I stop and support the bike. Its just to much when mixed with the chemicals riding releases into my blood.

Pilots have a rule. 24 hours from bottle to throttle. I think its a good one for us too.

i tried larger substitutes way back ..i think Kaliber was the only one on the market at the time..so i tend not to drive and just get drunk which is great at the time.

But as Nelly said kids and hangovers mix just as badly as drink and driving..in the last six years i could probably count on my two hand the times ive been out for a propper lash-up not wanting to waste my precious weekends on feeling ropey.

But last year i dicovered Becks Zero, after my previous experience of 0% larger it was a revelation. But i still got the same nausiaous feeling in my stomach the next day as i do when drinking regular booze, but minus the big H

interesting read. I wish they would split motorcycle accident statistics so that we could see what the risk is for sober riders. I have always tried to adjust the the statistics to adjust to subtract out the drunks.

What is it something like almost 60% of single vehicle motorcycle fatalities involve a drunk rider?
Then how many others are not wearing a helmet?
Then how many others are not wearing any gear?
Then how many others are running low tires? crappy brakes? how about high? just got in a fight with thier girlfriend?

I nominated myself the DD/CCW person in my group. Whenever we go out, I stay sober for mine and my family/friends protection.
Plus it is just a good idea to a have a clear head in the group.

Thank you Steve.
All of us are wired for something. Try to avoid a fatal attraction.
"How fatal was it?"
"Completely."
Johnny English, I think.
