Need help! How to put on/streach mirror rubber boots in place?

Hi,
I've purchased a fz6 last fall that was wrecked. Everything has gone great with restoring the bike back to its original condition, but the only thing i've had trouble with is the mirrors on the bike. I'm not sure how the rubber boot is streached and attached to the front fariring and stay bracket? Could somebody help me lol? stock photos just don't show enough because they dont show whats under the fairing side plastic pieces. Photos too would be awesome too. Thanks to whoever can help.

Off the top of my head, I don't believe the rubber boots can be slipped on or off of the mirrors. I think they are put on when the mirror is assembled, and can't be removed because of the pivot.

You can find some detailed assembly drawings on Yamaha's site. But there's not really any surprises with the mounting to the fairing, just a couple of studs from the mirror pivot which have nuts under the fairing.

You might need to get some OEM mirrors off of ebay, or just get some inexpensive replacement mirrors. I changed mine to some R6 replacements, I like the angle they sit at better.
 
Thanks for the fast reply, but I guess I'm still confused lol. I have factory mirrors, but I"m not sure how they sit on with the rubber boots. The boots with my mirrors slide off, and their is a bolt hole in the rubber too. from the looks of the photos of stock bikes somehow the rubber for teh mmirrors is stretched and wrapped around somehow. its been driving me crazy lol..

is the mirror on or off the bike (ie: is the rubber on it yet or not)? If it's on there, on the underside are little pieces that slide in on the fairing and wrap in to holes on the inside. Hard to explain, but it pushes in and "clips" in on the front as well.
 
humm...that seems to be my problem it sounds like..I bought the mirrors of ebay used. sounds like i need to get these clips somehow or buy new mirrors with them...thanks for the info thought! if anybody else has any other info feel free to post. thanks everybody!

well, yea...there are no clips, but there the underside of the mirror rubber is molded to fit inside little niches on the fairing both on the front and back. I have a 2006 though...not sure if yours is different. If you want, run to the dealer and ask how it goes. They'll slip it on (if it's already on the mirror) free of charge b/c it shouldn't take more than 30 seconds.
 
Like MarinaFazer has said, the mirror mounts down on to the rubber lip. Here's a couple of bad camera phone pic's so you can see it hopefully.

The boots can be pulled off of the OEM mirrors, I must have been thinking about my other mirrors.
 
hum..those look like the one's ive got, but my bike is a 2006. so maybe thats the issure. when i return home from college i'll check it out and see what i can get. I'll post some photos of what mine look like too.

OK, so do you have the rubber that goes OVER that bottom piece? I don't mean to insult any intelligence, but from the photos, you're missing the rubber piece that goes over the mirror bottoms. :)
 
You see, now thats waht I didnt' know. I thought the rubber streached over and down, or it was missing something. In the yamaha parts manual it doesnt show any lower boots, so I thought I had everything..thats gotta expain it because I couldn't find any way to streach that little boot over the fairing in any way. I'll have to call a dealer and find out more I guess.
 
yea, tell them you need the boots that cover the mirror base. Hopefully they'll have them. Check some of the threads of someone parting out their bike...maybe you can get em for cheap that way if it's pre-2007 :)
 
I think SovietRobot got it. Those mirrors are for the 07 onwards. Completely different to the 06 mirrors.

The rubber boot on '04-'06 is quite a bit bigger, it has 3 little knobs that clip into the fairing, and a wedge that pulls down over a hook on the windscreen.

Maybe, but I think they're 2006 mirrors but without the rubber that pulls down which is an extra piece that goes on to the bottom of the mirror and is currently missing from the OP's photo. :)

Yeah, you could be right, but the photo that Viser put up looks exactly like the one antijoy put up. I think the rubber bit's are on the OP's in that photo.

Need a bigger photo to make sure.

I'll take a photo of mine and put up for the OP, I've got the '04 model.

yup, you're absolutely correct. My 2006 mirrors look like your 2004 mirrors. In which case, the OP has the wrong mirrors for a 2006 bike as I think the position on the 2007 fairing is different than 2006 too.

OP: looks like you need the correct mirrors and boots to boot! lol

Yup. The '07 onwards dont have the wide windscreen like us, and their mirror mounts onto the fairing.
