Keeping stock parts....

Question for you all.. when doing a mod such as sprockets, turn signals, grips etc... do you hang on to your old parts? Obviously this is a "to each his own" question. but for the most part. Im starting to get quite the collection, and was wondering if it was worth it. The only reason is when i decide to sell the bike in a few years, ill still have the option to go stock and part out the aftermarket stuff...

I keep EVERYTHING! Like you I plan to keep my bike for a few years and when I finally sell/trade it I want to get as much as I can. Most people aren't crazy mod monsters like many of us on the Forum. Most folks want a bone stock bike when looking for a used one. I figure I can get about 1/2 to 2/3 back out of my mods if I part them out. If I trade I wont get anything or very little.

^ +1 When the FZ is sold, it will be sold stock. Everything else go on the forum or on ebay.

I also keep all of them. I have not done much on this bike, but on my last bike I kept everything down to the original flasher relay. You never know when you might want to reverse something that you did.

good deal, yeah i keep pretty much eveyrthing too. i got the old front turn signals, the old sprocket, the old fender from the license plate with the original turn signals. I even have the bolts from when i put the frame sliders on. I also painted the windscreen so i picked up a new one so i could have one that was still stock clear. the only thing i dont have is an original air box cover from when i cut my airbox open. i just was starting to feel like a pack rat hehe

I have also kept the windscreen and bolts from the sliders. I have all of the fenders, blinkers, and stuff. I think that I am going to cut the stock windscreen this summer though for a little extra air. My wife says that I am a pack rat, but I call it being thrifty.

I keep most things for mine that were stock. I sold the rear shock, as it SUCKS compared to the Ohlins, and I cannot imagine anybody wanting to go that backwards, but I guess it'll be their loss. I'm also selling the stock forks (if I ever find a taker)... But I kept all the stock turn signals & brackets. Those will go with the bike if i ever sell it. I love this thing :thumbup:

I keep everything.. including my crash set of fairings and black painted headlights for the track. They've been plastic welded together a few times. I figure eventually I'll be able to build an whole 2nd fz6 hah. I don't plan on selling or trading the fz.. goin to ride her until the wheels fall off. :rockon:

I'm much more inclined to buy a stock looking bike than one that has a bunch of aftermarket bits on it. A bike with aftermarket parts has been modified, and you have no way of knowing if the person who did the work was competent.

A bike with stock bits is likely to not have been mangled by a ham fisted mechanic. So stock parts are a selling point.

I also keep EVERYTHING! So at least I have the option of going back to stock if/when I sell or I can work out with a potential buyer what aftermarket parts they want/don't want.

I have everything in labeled baggies and boxes. Although keeping the stock muffler is a bit of a pain in the hoop for storing that odd shaped thing.....

Another advantage to keeping stock items is when I had to have a police issued vehicle inspection. Within minutes I can swap out my non-DOT approved signals with the stock ones (I used the same quick disconnect connectors on both sets). I could also swap out my Two Bros exhaust with the stock exhasut should I ever get hassled for an exhaust inspection! Put the stock parts on, pass my inspection, go home and put back on all my aftermarket parts. Too easy and "The Man" is none the wiser! :thumbup:

I kept everything except the stock exhaust,sold that to a member on here.

I had sold/given away everything since I knew I would never sell my FZ... and even if I ended up selling it, it would have been sold "as is"... but that's just me though...

Another reason to keep your stock parts is that if you crash, and the bike is totalled the insurance will let you get your mods back (if they are still worth it) as long as you can provide the stock parts back...

It's probably a good idea to keep stock exhausts and what could be interpreted as emissions related equipment if you plan on keeping the bike long term. Or maybe even in the near term...

There is most definitely people and/or organizations that are doing everything in their power to have laws enacted that would prohibit any type of modifications to intake/exhaust systems. In the event that happens you'll be glad you kept everything needed to go back to the factory set up.

all the stock parts i keep, because if something goes wrong with one of the mods all i have to do is put the stock part on and then save money so i could buy a new one.

I usually keep all of the stock parts. I don't do that may mods. I did sacrifice my stock windscreen to the GODS as I am working with Cee Bailey's to develop their aftermarket windscreens for 2007+ models.

I should have some pics in a few weeks.
