So im looking to do the Duel headlight mod this weekend, i have been putting it off because my wiring skills suck worse than a red headed step child. I guess ill grow some balls this weekend and give it a whirl. before anyone says anything, i have "skimmed" through the 48 different ways to do this mod (skimmed as in i didnt read the 23 pages of each saying "thanks it works") but i tried to read the write ups as good as possible, my two questions are, from my understanding so far, there is no way to do duel highs AND duel lows correct? also, which is the by far easiest way to do this mod, im 94% retarded and only got a 12 on my SAT's so my mom says playing with a soldering gun isnt the best idea. :Flip: but seriously, wiring is not my thing, can someone point me in the right direction for a very clear specific write up on this mod? i saw a few people did it in 10 minutes, and others it took hours.. so what gives...

Easy solution, I know its a long read but go to BikerDudes post about the mod. Its the only way you should ever consider doing this mod. All others are inferior methods and you wont forgive yourself if you go wrong with your soldering gun. Biker dudes method requires you to make a simple wire loom (which he may still be selling) and all you have to do is click it into place and drive!

well their are two ways you can do it. fast and easy way but dosent look as clean. or the long was that looks realy clean. i did it the fast easy way took me about 10 or 15 min, but i am good at soldering. look on you tube thats how i did mine or i have a post with a video on here

Well Mad Max, I can't say it is easy, as I am actually more retarded than you are when it comes to wiring. "Relay, 4 X 100, right???" But you can have dual lows and dual highs. Fred did mine, all I did was tell stupid stories. He did all of the work and had the design concept. We used two relays, and I have two lows and two highs, and I love it! In fact one member in the UK thinks it causes chaos on the motorways! So ask Fred for specifics because I don't have a clue. :thumbup:

There are several really good posts on the forum with pictures included about this mod. They are even low-SAT proof!

I STRONGLY suggest BD43s headlight mod. No soldering necessary and it looks stock. You can likely buy the cable from him (he's very active on the forum). You will get dual low beams, but the high beam is still the same as before.

To get dual high beams, you'd have to change one of the bulbs, which adds a lot to the process. Only one stock bulb is dual beam - BD43s mod takes advantage of that and lights the right-side low beam bulb, which Yamaha didn't connect from the factory for some dumb reason.

Something else to consider.....our bikes have VERY little electrical power to spare. If you have dual high beams, that adds a more significant drain on the small surplus you have to work with. If you decide later to add heated gear or extra lighting you could be in trouble. Dual low beams don't take much power (a bit less than the 'normal' high beam).

This has been covered in a few other threads, so I'll summarize.

Dual highs and lows can be done. Both my bike and Pete's bike have them. Pete's got the better setup since he has headlight relays. Still need to fix mine.

1. Biker Dude's harness is needed in order to do this. So go ahead and order or make his harness and try it. If you want to go true dual later, you've got the harness installed.

2. Eastern Beaver makes a relayed harness that will plug directly into the bike once you've done the Biker Dude modification. This will take care of all wiring and relay needs. All you've have left to do is modify a bulb and make a spacer.

3. Power draw isn't increased over the stock high beams. Consider that with high beams, the bike has two filaments on. With Biker Dude's modification, using either high or low beams, you will always have two and only two filaments on. With the true dual headlights, you will always have two and only two filaments on. So you're not exceeding the capacity of the bike's charging system. It is true, however, that low beam will no longer draw half the power (one filament on) of the high beam. But that's true of Biker Dude's mod as well.

4. You're not drawing any more power, but the electricity is taking a different path to get to the left headlight. (Right headlight for you UK folks.) It's now going through the high/low switch instead of bypassing it. So you've doubled the current through that switch. Biker Dude's mod doesn't overload the switch. The true dual mod (dreamed up by Cashcrzzy, gotta give credit where it's due) does overload the switch. Maybe it can handle it. Mine has so far. But if it can't, you won't know until it fails and you're left without any headlights at all. So use Eastern Beaver's harness or make your own with relays.

hey, thanks all! i was expecting to get alot of "go search the forum".. guess im still use to SBN. the only other question is, i have seen other posts where people were able to buy the plug end rather than fabricate it.. some said a $4 ford kit has it... does that still have to be modified?

i work in a sheetmetal shop, so fabbing that little part would be cake. but we only work with alum stainless and steel no brass
