Strange sound from Water pump?!

Sorry for pics, I'll post soon.
I started bike without any coolant for 30 secs. Maybe over heating in coolant pump was cracked that porcelain collar...

There's a bit of pressure on the seal and that ceramic ring (not alot) but without lubrication (coolant) you can easily damage that ceramic ring/washer. My money is that's when it broke.

On my old KLR, there were spec's (and adjusting shims available) to get the exact amount of clearance in the water pump (similar set up) but everything was inside the RS case, vs the FZ with an external water pump.

It NOT like a cage WP where most pumps have separate support bearing and you could spin the pump all day long W/O coolant and not hurt the bearing.

FWIW: After setting the valve clearances, I ran mine for a ~30 seconds w/out coolant or a radiator. Its only got maybe 300 miles on it since then tho.

I'd think thermal shock or a defect as more likely to kill it than anything. Because its the lowest part in the coolant system, it will have any coolant in the system even if there is not enough to pump.
