Suggestions for San Francisco trip

My daughter and I are flying out to San Francisco to visit family in May. And since my FZ6 won't fit in the overhead bin on the plane, I've rented a BMW k1600gt to ride while we are out there. I know there are some great roads in the SF area, and would appreciate any suggestions for day trips out of the city. An overnight stay outside the city is not out of the question, so if you know of a really great 2day trip, don't hesitate to suggest it.

I've never ridden a 1600gt, or any BMW for that matter, so if you have any experience with one, any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Howard,
You and your daughter will have a great trip when you come out in May. The weather should be just perfect for just about anywhere you should choose to travel and I'll throw out a few suggestions...you can see maps and descriptions on the Pashnit.com website which is really good.

If you head north of San Francisco you can do a day trip that can include the Marin Headlands, go up the coast on Hwy 1 as far as you want and then head east and end up in the Wine Country before coming back to San Francisco.

If you go south from San Fransisco, you can work your way through the Santa Cruz Mountains (my local stomping ground) ending up on Hwy 1 again through Santa Cruz to Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea. It's about 120 miles each way to the Monterey/Carmel area.

Heading east from S.F., you can ride to the Lake Tahoe area and explore the many highways that crisscross throgh the Sierras and the Gold Country. This trip would probably be more enjoyable as a two day trip, but with some planning an overnight stay in the Lake Tahoe are is a great option.

If you desire to ride the north or south options and want a local guide, I'd be happy to accompany you if I'm in town when you're here.
