this was a pretty interesting article. I remember when I first started longing for a motorcycle, 2004, I walked into a Yamaha dealer and saw the YZF600 and thought it was awesome then I saw the FZ6 and sat on it and was in heaven. I started doing more investigating on the FZ6 this past summer by visiting the local dealers and everyone I went to kept trying to steer me towards the FZ6R, its a nice looking bike but I knew what I wanted. I hope that Yamaha brings back something similar to the FZ6 in the future. Thanks for posting the article Admin!

All told, the FZ's engine tweaks bring power down to a newbie-friendly 64 bhp at 9750 rpm, with 38 lb.-ft. of torque at 8000 rpm. A great deal of that thrust is available right off idle, just as the engineers intended.

Down from 98bhp on the FZ6... That makes me sad.

i read that article recently and i must say.. what a shame... why not review all 3 r6, fz6, fz6r.. and besides the motor, they are 2 very very different bikes aimed at compleatly different market segments.. i felt after like "well thanks captain obvious, like i didnt know one was a race bikle and the other one isnt".. but nothing like some good publicity for the yamaha brand as well as showing readers that they have good choices when owning a yamaha :thumbup:

I got curious about the purported advantage that the FZ6R has in low-speed power and torque, so I overlaid the dyno curves in the article:

It looks like the FZ6R does indeed have a pretty significant advantage at low RPMs. But there's a whole lot of fun above about 9,300 RPM with the R6. I wanted to compare to the FZ6, but the magazine didn't have a dyno chart for an FZ6. My guess is that it would be somewhere between the R6 and FZ6R.

I think that putting the FZ name on the new FZ6R was a mistake. The FZ6/FZ1 seem to symbolize a great standard in sport touring. The new "R" is a beginner bike. There's nothing wrong with a beginner bike, just call it something that is its own instead of piggybacking from an already established good name. It dilutes the FZ name and reputation, IMO.

They should have called the FZ6R the FZ5R or something to designate it under the FZ6. That's the biggest mistake to me. The name makes it seem that the FZ6R is an updated FZ6 and that is definitely misleading.

Then the full fairing on the FZ6R makes it look more like a standard sportbike which looks faster. It is just a strange mix of confusion (to those that know). Most of the unknowledgeable new riders won't know anything about the original FZ6. Always moving forward.

It's like "you like coke?" "well here's coke 2 and it's the same." That's my take on the FZ6 vs the FZ6R. 98 down to 64?!?! Wow...

I agree, but since they were dumping the FZ6 I guess they wanted to capitalize on its name.
