I bought a 2009 FZ6 as my first bike and I couldn't be more satisfied with it. My friend bought a 2004 FZ6 as his first bike and shares similar sentiments. I have had mine for almost a year now, and I still have plenty to grow into. I am always thinking of what my next bike will be, but I don't...
Hey I just wanted to say thanks for everyone for all the great advice. My first motorcycle road trip was an absolute blast. If you're ever riding in FL I highly recommend riding down A1A on the Atlantic coast if your travel plans permit it.
Thanks so much for the advice, everyone. It's true that the roads in Florida are straight and flat; it's difficult to find anything BUT that. However, there is no shortage of Waffle Houses so I'll be able to get a hot breakfast for sure. :D
Everyone who contributed to the thread offered some...
I'm riding down to Vero Beach, FL this weekend from Jacksonville. It's a little over 200 miles one way. It's my first real road trip on my bike or any bike for that matter. Any suggestions and/or tips before I go? The bike is tip-top mechanically (T-CLOCS, etc). Any suggestions are appreciated...
Well, it seems that the majority of folks run a lighter oil. Next oil change I will switch to 10W-40. I'll do the change a bit sooner than I normally would; it's not going to hurt anything to have 20W-50 in there for 2000 miles.
Thanks for all the replies!
I saw that in the 2007 Service Manual (that I got from Boneman's site), the oil recommended is 10W-30 or 20W-40. However, I downloaded the 2009 owner's manual directly from Yamaha's website and I guess for the 2009 model year they changed the spec. It definitely says 10W-40 or 20W-50.
How...
So I'm running Valvoline 20W-50 (motorcycle-specific) oil in the bike now. The temperature outside is right in the gray area where the owner's manual suggests 10W-40 vice 20W-50. I chose 20W-50 because summer is coming soon and it's about to get HOT in Florida. The 20W-50 is pretty thick stuff...

Wow, that looks phenomenal. That's exactly what I'm after. Thanks for the tip!
I've got some spots on the pipes that look like water spots. Will the Mothers dope get rid of that?
What does everyone use to polish the exhaust headers on their FZ6's? I tried using Never-Dull wadding-type polish this weekend. It brightened them up a bit, but, not quite what I was hoping for. Suggestions?
This is what the owner's manual says regarding oil:
"In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils with a diesel specification of "CD" or oils of a higher quality than specified. In addition, do not...
I serviced the oil today with Castrol GTX 20W-50 and cleaned/lubed the chain for the second time. Does anyone have a particular type of oil that they think does well? Or a particular chain cleaner/lube?
Also, I downloaded the 2007 factory service manual from Boneman's FZ6 sight. My bike is a...
Thanks everyone!!
I did spend the first weekend in slow, no-traffic roads to get a feel for the bike's nuances. I slowly worked my way up to bigger roads throughout the week until I finally took her on the freeway (the Buckman Bridge here in Jacksonville) last night. What a thrill! The bike has...
Thanks for the reply, guys. I should have created this post in a more general forum rather than mods. I'm not sure how to move it. Anyway, thanks for the replies, and I'll get some photos up ASAP.
Hello Everyone,
I am the proud new owner of a 2009 FZ6, my first bike. I bought it about a week ago here in Jacksonvile, FL. It is stock save for Two Brothers exhaust. I could not be happier with it. All I want to do with my spare time is ride it.
My background: active duty military...
