Thanks for these comments. I clean my chain twice a year and lube about every 100 miles so I guess this protects the o rings and rollers. The cleaning process lets me examine the chain as well. Thanks all who contributed, Rumpole.

How long has your chain and sprockets lasted before replacement. There is a measuring guide in the workshop manual.
