I know the sv1000 I had was far worse with this problem. You could get very good mirror extenders for it. I don't know if these would work or if you could modify these to work. Or bar end mirrors could be the way to go!

Oh yes the old fazer the fzs600 had an even more clunky gearbox than the fz6. You had to really kick it in to 2nd. If you were not thinking it would go in to neutral all the time. Never done it on the fz6.
