I hear ya. I just lucked out and have a station in my small town that sells it. Non-oxygenated premium gasoline costs quite a bit more, though. Definitely not worth it for my car or bike.

I bought my bike last year with LV cans installed, with no baffles. There is a loud drone at 3k and lesser so at 6k. Putting around town at 30mph in 3rd gear is right at the 3k rpm mark, so I either kick it down to 2nd gear or drive over the limit a bit in 3rd.

Just throw in another vote of confidence. 99% of all gas stations in MN have up to 10% ethanol mixed in. I do have a place right in town that sells both ethanol free and 10%, and I've seen no difference. Maybe a slight change in MPGs, but if there is, it's minimal.

Hm, it's not the oil filter? That's there in that area of the bike, too. Just thinking of the simple things before we get too deep.

Same experience here. OP, take off the front sprocket cover, too. It's also probably full of fling-off that should be cleaned up. Most any kind of degreaser will work. I used the Dupont stuff in a can before, now all I use is kerosene which works really well.

I always lift my foot off when down shirting, put my toe on the lever, and just use the weight of my leg to do the work.

Doing that would require a hefty switch with some larger gauge wires than you'd need. I'm not positive, but you should be able to mount a switch under the seat or somewhere out of sight that would open the kill switch circuit or side/center stand switch circuits. Also, I'd be having a chat...

Another thing I thought of that a lot of people do to older vehicles is install a hidden kill switch or re-wire the start button to a hidden button. It will at least keep them from driving off with it.

Park the bike outside your window and wait with a ranged weapon of choice. What probably would be best is a cable and maybe a motion activated camera so you can hopefully get a picture of the perp.
