Yes the gear shift rod. The adjustment screw nearest the rear of the bike can hit the frame if not adjusted "properly". I debated replacing the rod with the stock one but I think you would have to drill out one of the connection points to do so. I may still do it if I have problems later...

My best saftey tip is just take a minute before you get on the bike to just get your head on right. Lucky for us the safest way to ride also makes for the best rides... with a clear head.

Just ride as you would if the tires were cold and you will be more than fine, the worst thing you can do is tense up. If there is any chance of rain I always pack my rain liners. I ride in the rain all the time to work and my liners keep my clothes dry.

Don't by the new bike yet get a used one ride it until trip sell used one. Fly south, buy a reliable used bike once you get there, with the time saved flying go into S. America, sell bike, fly home. Come home buy new bike.
