Mine are throw over, with a strap to each pillion peg, one going under the (stock) number plate mount. Never had any melting or clearance issues. As long as there's enough of the fender eliminator there to stop the strap touching the hot metal, it should be fine.

If it's a stock exhaust with the plastic vanity cover on it, throw over soft luggage is fine. Where are your straps going?

Winterising for riding or storing?

Don't worry, mine only get done for special occasions. Most of the year they're a horrible shade of brown (think interior decorating in the '70s) with a load of surface rust around the link pipe between 2 and 3.
