I think the intended mounting direction is the other way but I hold the grips toward the inside and they felt better with the rubber part there instead of holding the slippery aluminum part. I did dry fit them both ways before gluing them that way.

Was just outside taking pics to help another forumite with a start button problem and stopped for a sec to get a pic of the grips installed on my FZ.

YES, if I read your description correctly I have just had (repaired) the exact same problem. Give me about 1hr and I'll get some pics showing the fix.
