You're supposed to check the oil with the bike warm and on the center stand, so that may have been why your oil level was low if you checked it cold. I'm guessing that's because a certain amount of air will mix with the oil and increase the volume when warm.

Honestly, you have more wiggle room with the weight than you do with the additives and type of oil. I would stick to the OEM filter. Unless you can verify the pressure relief valve values from both manufacturers you could be causing oil flow malfunction during warm up. I've heard of it happening on a ninja 636.

According to Yamaha and all the other manufacturers, you should only use an OEM filter due to the pressure relief valve in the oil filter. A K&N, Wix, etc may fit and thread onto the motor, but the pressure relief valve is most likely not set the same as the OEM filter because car and motorcycle...
