Absolutely nothing wrong with take offs I run them on everything from the 250 to my GSX-R 750. Reliability and performance are NOT sacrificed or an issue.

His helmet had the straps screwed in. He went and bought nylon webbing from a fabric store and simply took the screw out and replaced the webbing. He used loctite on the screws but said maybe it wasn't a good Idea if he had to replace it again.
