Start the bike from cold for about 10 seconds, turn off & check the header pipes up high, one at a time with spit on the end of your finger or a wet rag & find out if any of the pipes is cold or luke warm is a good place to start, to isolate a cylinder with a faulty/shorted plug or cap/ignition...

Have ridden them both together, & there is not enough difference to worry about, its still the same bike. Go for the best condition & lowest miles over age if the price is right, they are all good, I like the look of the later models more though.
