Hi guys,

Recently at work there has been some talk about holding a charity boxing match. Most of the guys are mid 30's and of varying levels of fitness and ability.
I have never done any form of fighting before but being spurned on by Humpy's fitness kick I am keen to get involved.

What do you reckon?
Any tips, advice or training programs greatly appreciated.

Duck! A Lot!
Seriously, what is your BMI? Hypertension? Blood Sugar?
Can you ride a stationary bycle at full tension for 2 minutes?
Ask your favorite quack. I had a Heart attack last Febuary. They are really no fun.
Get your SO to record it on their cell. That way we can watch you flop around like a gaffed fish and root for the EMT guys.
You might make it to Youtube. You'll be a star.

Well I'm over weight by about 8kg, my cholesterol was high last year and I have addressed this. My blood pressure is good and I have had an ECG done at work to check the old ticker and blood sugar within normal range.
Really all I have been lacking is a bit of self discipline and effort.
I can ride a stationary bike at full tension for two minutes. I regularly do 2 minute cycles of CPR which is different I know but still knackering. I walk about 6 km every shift.
I used to be cardiovascular fit until about 3 years ago. I don't smoke and plan on losing the belly. I'll keep you all posted.

I'd recommend some interval or circuit training to get fit

something like
- 5 minutes high intensity
- 1 minute rest
repeat 3 times

There's a crossfit workout called "Fight Gone Bad" which was designed as a conditioning circuit for MMA fighters, I think it would be quite useful.

If you go to boxing classes then they should hopefully have a conditioning circuit at the end or beginning.

another idea:
- 60 seconds jogging
- bear crawl for 60 seconds (keeping hips low)
- 60 seconds jogging
- max push-ups in 60 seconds
- 60 seconds jogging
- 60 seconds sit ups
- 60 seconds jogging
- 60 seconds bodyweight squats (legs below parallel)
repeat 2-3 times

there's plenty of stuff you can do to get fit for the fight, though I warn you it's slightly vomit inducing

I look forward to that lol, I'm going to shed the pounds by pounding the streets first and the look at training intensity. I think that I will lose the 8kg in about 3 weeks.
Ive contacted a few clubs and I'm waiting for them to get back to me.

I've never done boxing but I used to train with someone who did (way back when I was 19/20 ), I always remember skipping being one of the toughest parts (no jokes about double Dutch and the likes ;)). I know it's classed as a girls activity but if you do it (properly) you'll lose lbs
I'm not sure about getting hit, a mate of mine (same age as me, 45) still does karate, but he admits your body takes much longer to repair itself if you do get injured. Maybe sticking with the boxing on your Wii is the safest way to do it ;).

Good luck with the training Neil

Well, at least you might not die. Although when you get to the 2:30 mark of the 3rd round and those gloves weigh about 250 pounds each (116 Kilos or so) and you cannot lift them, you will learn to enjoyed getting hit in the face. Might as well, you won't be able to stop it. Practice your Rope-A-Dope.
As far as arobics, remember you need 10 minutes before it actually has any effect.
I ride a mountain bike. I'm up to about 14 minutes now. Once around the block. When the weather breaks and gets into the 60's, I'l go for two and start working on lap times. I'm a former HEAVY smoker who is trying to quit. So one lap is enough for now.

Hi Martin, its planned to be a one off event. So hopefully the only lasting effect is a fitter trimmer me.
Have a skipping rope, used to be able to do 10 minutes in one hit. Can manage about 1 minute now. Coordination gone to bloody pot.

Neil! Neil! Keep your, your left! your left! left up! Oh sheeeeet!

I think it's a great sport! It provides lots of exercise with the benefit of some self defense and confidence building. Part of self defense is being able to experience being hit and not be intimidated.

Start with a tennis ball....Have fun, be safe! :) :D

Ok I'm sure you can survive one match Neil (didn't read your first post properly ).
I used to be able to do quite a bit of skipping (even a bit of double rotation)
but I tried it not that long ago (using the kids skipping rope), but I couldn't keep it up for long, I blame the equipment, the ropes were too short so I had to swing my arms as well. (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it ;))

I'm sure the training will help get you fit, good luck on your new training schedule, keep us posted .

I have to admit I am feeling a bit weird about going to a gym full of young people and making a complete twat of myself.
If I get some positive feedback mentally I'll feel better. Hopefully some of the old lads at work will join to and make the first time a bit easier.
