Crashed this morning

just heard from the doctor on the results of my xrays. My knees look ok but there is an abnormality in my lower back (possible fracture in the t12 vertebrae). I'm sitting in the waiting room at the hospital waiting to get an MRI on my lower back. I'll let you know what happens!

Should I start to look into getting a lawyer? How would it benefit or negativley affect me?

Well a fracture of T12, depending on the severity of the fracture, can lead to a lot of different long term symptoms or nothing at all. The good thing is that your still young and relatively healthy.

If I were you, I'd consult a lawyer before the other guy's insurance settles on a price for your suffering. You'll likely get more money out of it.
 
Without actually looking up he traffic codes for California, I'm going to say it is illegal for anyone to make a U-turn unless they are at an intersection (it is that way in VA). That puts him at fault.

Glad you are not seriously hurt!

There is no doubt who is at fault here, the other guys insurance company is already talking about paying out to cover his bike. What he is unsure of is the coverage of his medical bills and pain/suffering. That is where the lawyer comes into play... get way more money.
 
I'm sure that his insurance is covering medical bills and pain/suffering already. The question is how much and when I should settle. At this point, I'm definitely not settling until everything is figured out with my back. I'll wait to contact a lawyer until the results come back from the MRI on Friday.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a lawyer to chat with for this kind of situation? Will his insurance cover my lawyer fees? I've never had to deal with a lawyer before, and the advertisements I see on TV for motorcycle and injury lawyers make me not trust them already.

Thanks for the info on the T12 fracture rsw81. I'll give you the details of their diagnosis from the MRI when I find out, and get your opinion on things.
 
Okay members, time to step up and help a fellow member as we already have a doctor in the house. Are there any lawyers on this forum for some good legal advice?
 
I'm sorry to hear about your accident. Strange thing is I had my accident several lights down from you at Venice and Overland several weeks ago. bah, bad luck area. I've had my share of car accidents in the past and learned when it comes to injuries and settling, a lawyer is always a must. When it comes to insurance companies, they are always in it for them selves. Having a third party lawyer improves your chances of getting a fair settlement. Also I would check into the police's response policy. doesn't matter how serious the accident is, they should be there when called. This could be a serious lawsuit against the police department. I highly advise getting a good lawyer. And Good Luck.

MRI results came back. The abnormality on T12 was pre-existing and the doctor said that it shouldn't be causing me issues. However, they did see "a disc between T6 and T7". I'm not sure what that means. He is going to refer me to bone or back specialist or something on Monday. He also said that they most likely cannot perform any kind of invasive surgery to fix the issue, only physical therapy will help.

Well, I don't know what he means by you have a disc between T6 and T7. Everyone has a disc there. What's wrong with the disc is the question. Is it bulging, ruptured, etc.?

Some statistics for you: 80% of adult Americans experience back pain at some point in their life related to disc pathology. Of those, 90% recovery with conservative therapy (drugs and physical therapy). Only the other 10% need any surgical intervention. That being said, it is incredibly likely that you will heal up just fine with physical therapy assuming something more serious isn't wrong that they didn't tell you.
 
Met with the orthopaedic surgeon this morning. He said "Good thing you are strong and healthy and were wearing your equipment. This could have been a LOT worse." He said that I shouldn't be too concerned with my injuries or the long-term impact of them, and 6-weeks of physical therapy will have me back in action!

He also thought I was crazy for not having a lawyer yet. He gave me a recommendation for a personal injury lawyer who I am going to contact today. PLEASE let me know if anyone has any suggestions for one, or if anyone has experience dealing with a lawyer after an accident. I have some questions.
 
Amazing, almost 5000 members and knowone is in law? And I'm not talking law enforcement, because we have several members who are.

Maybe it's against the rules to post advice on public forums, but people in the medical field has. If so, it could also be given in a 3rd person point of view. Like I had a friend who.......la di da di da

I'm not necessarily looking for advice from a lawyer on the board, just suggestions for a good, trustworthy one and some questions for people that have used a lawyer successfully in the past.

I'm more than willing to pay for advice from an actual lawyer, or rather have AAA pay for me to get advice :)
 
well, make sure you ask what the lawyer's cut will be. You usually don't pay from your pocket. From my past experience in chicago, they take a percentage of the settlement. This is good but can be bad. The good is that the lawyer will work damn hard to settle as high as possible for you. But the bad depends on his cut. A friend of mine got screwed over at about 30%. Make sure you explain to him about the situation with the police too. Note the exact time and date you called the police. This will help you if your lawyer decides there is a case against the city police.

Well I would hope that the settlement I would receive with a lawyer would be the original settlement + his cut + some more, which would be the only reason to get a lawyer.

casual_lee -- why do you think we have a case against the PD? Because they didn't come to the scene?
 
You're a tax payer, the police are public servants paid by the tax payers, it's their job to be called out to the scene of an accident. Did you call 911? If so, there should still be a recording.
