Splash. Play. Enjoy the sand and surf. You won't get eaten by a shark. Probably.

You have seen the reports on television for the past ten years. It seems that every single summer, the media reports a glut of sharks pulling up to the coastline of the United States of America for a varitable cornucopia of human organs and limbs.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-News-Fark-Media/dp/1592402917/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-6744941-1091334?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181055992&sr=8-1"]Farkitrol®[/ame] works by interfering with the process by which information transmitted from the Mainstream Media enters the mind and becomes fact. By activating the bull**** receptors of patients, such nonsense can be properly identifed as "Totally Unmitigated Horsehockey" and properly ignored.

Clinical studies have shown that subjects treated with [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-News-Fark-Media/dp/1592402917/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-6744941-1091334?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181055992&sr=8-1"]Farkitrol®[/ame] have successfully scoffed and ignored the constant deluge of summertime "reporting" and, furthermore, that these subjects have no trepidation when journeying to the beach. In fact, 34,999,999 of [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-News-Fark-Media/dp/1592402917/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-6744941-1091334?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181055992&sr=8-1"]Farkitrol®[/ame]'s 35,000,000 regular users successfully avoided becoming shark food on trips to the beach. But to be fair, the one user who was eaten by a shark only tried [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-News-Fark-Media/dp/1592402917/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-6744941-1091334?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181055992&sr=8-1"]Farkitrol®[/ame] once. And she tasted awfully good with seaweed.

This information cannot replace your doctor's advice or everyday common horsesense. Only you can assess the benefits and risks of ignoring the ad-revenue-generating trends the media constantly relies on and thinking for yourself.

What could possibly be more dangerous for your child than a plot of land filled with descending slopes, moving parts, pipes and bars? How about not letting them have any fun with it? Every single year, the Mainstream Media reports on exactly how unsafe it is for a kid to go out and play on the grounds that have been designated "playgrounds". [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-News-Fark-Media/dp/1592402917/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-6744941-1091334?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181055992&sr=8-1"]Farkitrol®[/ame] works by helping the patient realize that they were once kids themselves, and that falling down and scraping an elbow or slamming their shins against the ladder for the monkeybars didn't kill them. It just made them learn how not do that the next time.

Clinical studies have shown that subjects treated with [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-News-Fark-Media/dp/1592402917/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-6744941-1091334?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181055992&sr=8-1"]Farkitrol®[/ame] have stopped allowing society to dictate what's acceptible for their children. It's your child, dammit. Short of stuffing it full of Ny-Quil to make it sleep or beating it with a belt buckle, no one should care how you raise it. Just do your best and try to raise it how you feel is right. Honestly, if you can keep the little bastards from talking in the theater during a movie, most of society will deem you a successful parent.

It won't shatter if you swing it around a bit and let it have some fun. But only you can make that determination.

There is so much hype that I saw on Bloomberg that pork futures are trading lower just because they think people are stupid enough to worry about getting swine flu from eating pork.

I know I'll be stocking the chest freezer with ribs here in a couple of weeks.

mmmmm ribs.

200 a year maybe.
Even then the majority of those are from young children, the elderly, and people of general weak health, and are compounded by other illnesses.

Hes actually closer to the correct estimate than you might think. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has estimated that between the years of 1993-2003 approx 36,000 flu related deaths occured. Obviously divided by 365 you get around 98 deaths a day.

The deaths in that time period actually ranged from 17,000 to 52,000. These numbers are of course, as I said "flu related" deaths in which influenza was the underlying cause.

Just an interesting tidbit

Wrong answer. 35,000 Americans die a year for the standard flu.

Is it hype? At this point yes and it will do more harm than good. Could it become a global concern? Probably not this time. The symptoms are easily recognized enough. If this flu had a faster onseat to death time then we should be more concerned.

I think it's worth a little concern, but just keep washing your hands and avoid the sick people and this will be gone and done with in a few months. The media play this crap up because it makes for GREAT ratings. The comment board on the local news website are filling like crazy...so there's your answer. It's something to think about, but it's mostly just hype. People die from regular old influenza every day, but it's just old news...a new strain comes around, and suddenly it's the apocalypse

Sorry, long-winded, but that's my two cents.

I agree it' ssomething to be aware of, but not really something to be that concerned of. It certainly doesn't deserve the front page headlines that it's getting daily. Must be quiet out there in media land.

The UK has around 12,000 deaths a year from common flu, I don't recall seeing any headlines in the UK papers, or on TV about the 12,000 last year, although it's rare I read newspapers here now, usually so full of ruubbish. Just as I wrote earlier about the number of deaths around the world from measles, no headlines for that either.

Doesn't sell newspapers really. However in the UK we apparently have enough drugs to treats 50% of the population, so if it did happen I hope I'm one of the 30 million who will be chosen to be treat. Maybe we should have a lottery. More useless information from the 'press'.

Because of the hype and 5 cases of flu in the UK we're now all going to get a leaflet through the door. I'd hazard a guess that the printing industry needs a cash injection, perhaps the printers are owned by the newspapers, so making more money by hype *cynic*

I notice that Mexico only actually has 7 deaths confirmed as being flu btw. Not that it makes it any better, any needless death is a bad thing.

The reason why people are making a bigger deal of this even though a lot of people die from the regular flu is because this strain is killing "healthy" people and does not age discriminate. The regular flu usually claims the lives of the elderly, the very young, or the already sick/weak. Also, we have no vaccine for this strain yet.
