I had my valve clearance check done at the shop (It's just a bit beyond my capabilities) and then I changed my oil. I noticed small bits that came out with the oil. Could that be from messing with the valve or is this a symptom of something more drastic? They didn't look metallic but I'm not 100% sure.

Metal, steel, aluminum, I'd be concerned. Gasket making compounds like silicon in very small volume would be normal.

Suggested practice would be to complete the oil change and run the engine perhaps 15 min and change the oil just to remove anything knocked into circulation.

I suspect you're fine. Although it would be nice to identify the items.
