Hello, I now own a Sportster.

Tell us now... How did this happen?

Well here I am in my third ride season on the FZ6 and for unexplained reasons I cannot for the like of me get comfortable. I mean my throttle thumb is killing me, due to the odd angle [speaking for me] of the handlebar and the buzz felt at interstate speeds. I've tried many of the tips offered here and many worked but again this season it's just not working. Because of the pain I'm missing out on some longer trips my ride partners go on.

My initial thought was to look then for a second bike, a long distant bike that could be justified to the wife as a to-and-from work bike. I can only imagine the pain of long distance traveling (1000+ miles) with the current setup. One requirement however was that it had to have a backrest for the wife. In her country they don't have such fast bikes and the FZ6 scared her, she felt she was going to fall off - hard to explain.

Anyway, I looked at many makes/models and sadly far too many of them are huge tractors. Then, those that did kinda fit looked cheap and would not last. So off to the HD dealer. Mind you I'm still looking at only a second bike and a used bike would probably all I could budget here at current interests rates.

Wife and I looked at the used [in a separate building] 883 Sportsters (only two available) and didn't care much for the Low or Nightster model.
OK here is how I think... I understand that economic stimulus bill provides a tax credit for the purchase of a “new” motorcycle. For a few hundred more, minus the sales tax, makes for a good deal. So we go inside to look at the new XL883C Sportsters.

My eye immediately caught the last bike in the row, it looked like a Softail because of the laced 21 inch wheel (darn - too expensive). A second glance and it was to be my 883 - one beautiful looking ride in a Candy Root Beer paint scheme.

I could afford it but thought if I like one bike over the other the other would just sit. So the trade was on.

These images unfortunately do not show the true Candy Root Beer color.

For now just a short grade:
Fit and Finish: Not as good but with less plastic. (A- / B+)
Ride: More jarring on bigger bumps but much the same. Actually better than my friends 1200 Custom but not the sportbike feel of the FZ6. (A)
Gas Mileage: MPG 50 plus. (A+)
Interstate Engine Buzz: No more thumb pain or hand falling asleep. (A+)
Fatigue: Less (less power band shifting and far less wind buffeting) but the lower back gets more work. (A-)

I'll miss the FZ6, I put about 12,000 miles on her and she did me well.

Very cool.

BTW, with the 1200 pistons the 883 heads are a PERFECT match and you'll actually make more power than a stock 1200. Cheap to do too.

My ride partner was disappointed I didn't get the 1200. But your correct, everywhere I search says the same thing; The aftermarket mods will get you more HP than a stock 1200 and cheaper.

The Sporty was on my short list for upgrade from my learner bike, but I ultimately got the FZ6. The Sporty looked to have a more standard riding position than most other HDs. Read some good reviews of the modern Sporties, too. Ultimately, it seemed too expensive compared to the value of the FZ6, and we all know nothing really beats the FZ6 in value.

I hate to admit being seduced by nothing but marketing hype, the something about the HD brand holds a strong allure. I love the look and sound of them, and have a feeling that somehow I might be more "into the vibe" while riding one even though I don't think the machine is as good in most ways as an FZ6. I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Be sure to write up a comparo.

I wouldn't have thought the Sportster would be considered a tourer. but hey, if it works for you, it works for you.

Love that rootbeer color, that's pretty!!

The vibes have never bothered me, but the lower back "curve" any Harley gives you, I think would bother me much worse; good thing there's a variety of bikes to fit us variety of riders!

Enjoy your new bike, and hey dammit, wave back! :p :D

If you decide 48hp isn't enough here's a few places that can help out.

http://www.jtsperformance.com/

883-1200 conversion package

Sportster Performance Kits > only $899.00!

Cycle Rama Inc. Performance Engine Specialist for Harley-Davidson®

I'm sure there are other places but these are the ones I've bumped into in Buell land.

Oh, if you care...here's my list of Sportster mods:

1) Shocks! Street Bike Shocks
2) SS Brakeline and performance brake pads
3) Tires
4) 1200cc big bore kit
5) 2 into 1 Vance and Hines exhaust Vance & Hines: Performance Exhaust Systems
6) Power Commander 5 Power Commander V Support, Find Installation Guides and Maps
7) Dyno Tune

Be wary of the HD shop trying to sell you Screamin' Eagle stuff to fix problems. Find a good tuner and get a proper dyno tune and the bike will run better in stock form.

This is from Johnson Engine Tech comparing a stock 883 to modded 883 with the full 1200 conversion, amazing! With this comb the modify the heads in a big way, smaller ports and valves to increase the charge velocity. Nice!

Thanks and damn straight I'll wave back. I'll be the non-Harley looking rider with the ride gear and all. :)

As far as the lower back pain, I say this now but it's not as bad as my thumb/wrist pain was on the FZ.

Hellgate your right about the shocks. HD re-tuned the suspension for the '09 models but I still feel them bottoming out. They may not actually be bottoming out, but they feel so on certain rail tracks around here. I need to adjust them a notch or two and see.

As far as the brakes go, I think they feel good and probably because I'm getting more stopping power from the back wheel then on the FZ. This might have something to do with the front controls.

I keep thinking about the Dunlops I had on my V45 in '82... not very assuring in rain. These tires are Dunlop so we'll see if they perform better today then the past. I may at some point try the Michelin's - I think they have a 21" for my front.

I like the looks of the Vance & Hines "Sideshots". The 2 into 1 maybe too low for clearance. I'll look around at the bike rally's and see. Screamin' Eagles is the preference around these parts -- you should know by now I have to be a non-conformist. :) Yes, I'll go with the Vance's.
