March 2010 SoCal Ride

Calling all SoCal riders! :steve: Mark your calendars for a SoCal Forum Ride in March. Give us your feedback:

(1) Either Saturday, March 6 or Saturday, March 13
(2) Route ideas (just my quick brain storm):
- Palomar Mt, Banner Grade, Montezuma (not sure what the snow condition will be)
- 94, Borrego Springs (pretty south if LA folks are coming down)
- Ortega Highway
- Hemet to Indian Wells via 74
Any other ideas for a fun ride (especially from you more experienced riders)?

Rode with Wavex and Cali rider today. All I can say is "Sick!!!!"

Right now (today) there is snow on the sides of the road on Palomar at higher elevations. Conditions are good but you have to watch for water patches and sand near the top of South and East Grades. Weather was very warm today. Montezuma conditions are great. Today it was in the mid to high 70's and by the time we road it a few times and stopped to eat, my 'T' shirt was sopping wet cuz I started out with a wind barrier under my leathers. Don't know about Banner Grade but we can ask Scar on the SoCal Riders Group if they rode Banner later today. Any of these roads can change conditions very quickly so a rule of thumb would be learn the road to see what it's conditions are like, then maybe go hard on it if it's nice.
I imagine it will be even warmer in a few weeks. I'm open to either week.

Here's a 'draft' map version 2 (Feb 16) for the ride in March. (Map includes the San Diego meet up location in Mira Mesa). Let's plan on March 13th. :Flash:

Thanks for the feedback Cali Rider and NcCoder! I updated the route.

Tentative trip detail version 2 (updated Feb 16):

Meet at the Mobile at 76/15 at 8:45am to leave by 9am (Point B)
Travel to Palomar Mountain via South Grade
Go up and down South Grade
Travel to Borrego Springs via Montezuma Road
Lunch at Carlee's in Borrego Springs (Point G)
Travel to Wynola Road via 78 and Banner Grade
Split up for the ride home (Point J)

This is just a draft so chime in with any feedback/suggestions! We can always change the route once we're out and see the road conditions. Let's make this a fun, safe ride! :cheer:

Um, this portion should be eliminated. Harrison grade is a dirt/gravel single lane trail for about 9 miles, suitable for dual-sport bikes. I traveled it on my FZ a while back and would NOT ride it again on the same bike.

Cali Rider, I removed the Nate Harrison Grade portion of the route. I saw it was twisty on the map, but hadn't ridden it before. Thanks for the heads up! :thumbup: The map and route are updated accordingly.
