So I noticed the other day that the Yamaha US website finally has the FZ8 listed, so I decided to stop by the dealership to check it out.
Turns out it won't be out on the floor until December but the dealer offered the 2010 FZ1 for $8900 versus the FZ8 for $8500. He also looked at my steed and offered $2900 for it. She's got 13K miles on it with Givi sides/top, 2Bros Ti, PC2 and B22's with only 4K miles (still looks new).
So got me thinking if I should, I wonder.................................

I say FZ8. I would opt for the FZ1 if they offered the N version here in the US. I have never been real crazy about the quarter fairing...either full dressed or completely naked, none of this half stuff.

Hard decision. You are offerred too little for all the equipment you have on your bike - maybe you should sell that stuff separately. As for the FZ1 vs. FZ6, I do like the looks of the FZ8 better. The main advantage of the FZ1 is that it has been around and you can buy a slightly used one for dirt cheap. The other big feature is the adjustable suspension. If you ride two up, the FZ1 has grab handles and is probably a tad bigger. I think the dimensions on the Yamaha site were just copied from the FZ1, so the FZ8 dimensions are probably not correct.

+1 on the FZ1. The FZ8 is a new model with new engine that certainly has bugs that have yet to be discovered. An old rule is “Never buy the the first model year”. The FZ1 is time tested, more bang for the buck and loads of accessories are available. No heft penalty as Yamaha lists them as the same weight. Yamaha's comparison page:

I'm just the opposite. I like the 1/4 fairing look, not crazy about the naked look at all. But if both were offered in both trims, which wouldn't be a bad idea for Yamaha, I think I would go for the 8. The FZ6 has loads of power and I think the FZ1 would be more power than needed. I do a lot of riding on twisties and how many times have you heard that a 600 will outride a litre bike on tight turns? A smaller frame would handle a little quicker. It's about time that the Japanese manufacturers came out with a 750 or 800 cc bike.

FZ1, sell your bike locally on your own, you should easily get more than 2900 especially with all the accessories.

Considering that a vast majority of FZ6 owners prefer their FZ6 to the FZ8 (http://www.600riders.com/forum/fz6-...ey-yamaha-read-fz6-owners-talk-about-fz8.html). I would say that the FZ1 would be the logical upgrade, especially given that the numbers below would suggest that the FZ6 outperforms the FZ8 (See references at the end of Performance)

Cost:
FZ1: 10.5k US
FZ8: 8.5k US
FZ6: 7k US

Average Mileage:
FZ1: 35 mpg
FZ8: 39.8 mpg
FZ6: 40 mpg

Wet Weight:
FZ1: 487 lbs
FZ8: 487 lbs
FZ6: 465 lbs

Torque:
FZ1: 78.2 ft/lbs at 10,800 RPM
FZ8: 60.8 ft/lbs at 8,000 RPM
FZ6: 46.5 ft/lbs at 10,000 RPM

Horsepower at the Crank
FZ1: 148 hp at 11,000 RPM
FZ8: 105 hp at 10,000 RPM
FZ6: 97 hp at 12,000 RPM

Performance:
FZ1: ?????????
FZ8: 0-60 in 3.64 secs 0-100 in 8.10 secs 0-120 in 13.14 secs top speed 141 MPH Standing quarter 11.93secs at 115.87 mph (Reference: January 2010 Issue of Fast Bikes)
FZ6: 0-60 in 3.44 secs 0-100 in 7.87 secs 0-120 in not found secs top speed 227.8 kmh or 141.55 MPH Standing quarter 11.30 secs at 119.42 mph (Reference: Honda 599 vs. Suzuki SV650 vs. Yamaha FZ6 - Road Test & Middleweight Motorcycle Comparison Review - Motorcyclist Online & Yamaha FZ6 Fazer)

Styling:
Well, that one is subjective.

What's wrong with your FZ6? With you only having 4000 miles on the bike, it doesn't justify spending more money getting another bike for it to just sit like your FZ has.

Just my .03 cents.

sounds like you are doing some touring (inferring that from you having givi cases).
in that case go with the fz1. it has a fairing. lots of power and torque. a big downside is its range, which is like 130 miles. somebody correct me if i'm wrong here.
it's better to buy a used fz1 off of craigslist or something.
from what i've read, the competition to the fz8 blows it out of the water.
