I use JVC marshmellow ear buds. They have the squishy ear plug material so they serve as earplugs too. They are small enough so that they do not fall out when I put my helmet on. I listen to music while I ride but keep the volume low. I can hear and feel the traffic just fine.

I use JVC marshmellow earbuds. They deform just like ear plug and have a low profile so that the helmet fits. I noticed that the new ones have a shorter cord. I have been using these (well not the same ones) for 3 years now.

I use synthetic (Ropella) and it is good for 10,000+ miles. My riding is mostly commuting (usually around 4-5000 rpms) with some highway sprinkled in. One of the advantages of syntethic is that it doesn't break-down after 3000-5000 miles like the regular stuff.
