So found out yesterday that I will need surgery for a torn labrum.:(
The thing is..forgot to ask how long I would be out from riding do to that. Anyone had experience? I know I will have to do PT and such but hopefully I can ride soon after the surgery! I hope it's not too long! Thanks

I had a partial tear in my right scapula muscle, no surgery but I was ooc for 6 weeks. I hated being off my dirt bike.

i tore my rotator cuff, it was actually easier riding my bike than driving

i'd expect normal riding to be ok, but if the bike starts to fall or you have to turn the bars hard you may have problems

Ouch man! Yeah I have rotator cuff tendonitis and the laberal tear..
But this gives me a little hope..because one of my friends said 2 MONTHS!! That would put me out for the season pretty much here!

You should ask your surgeon, but I'd suspect minimum 6-8 weeks, possibly longer with therapy. Shoulders are a mess to rehab because they are such unstable joints. Your labrum is a large part of what holds your humeral head in the glenoid socket, creating a suction cup effect. Without it, or without letting it heal properly, you'll be prone to shoulder dislocations and rotator cuff pathology. As much as you'd be pissed missing the second half of this riding season, look at the bigger picture of pain free riding in years to come. Take care of the shoulder this season and it will take care of you in future riding seasons.

^^ I can vouch for that statement. Too soon and you simply extend the suffering for years vs months. Ask my right knee!
Just cause its not swollen, hurting, and it works, doesn't mean its ready to race stand up Jet-Ski! lol it took 4 years to get it OK, vs sitting out a summer. Just sayin.... A foolish mistake on my part!

Mine was 12 weeks before I was useful. I tore out half of my labrum and dislodged half of my cartilage.... I had both shoulders done about the same way. Putting pressure on it was rough until about week 12 but the damage was pretty bad. It will really depend if you have a SLAP or a Bankhart tear.

Speak to Sweaterdude, he has just had the same surgery and recovery.
Check out his posts on the subject.

Are you positive you need the surgery? I went in to my doctor when I had a slight pain in my shoulder and they did a cat scan. They found that I had a partial tear in my main bicep tendon that runs over the head of the bone and found I had tore my labrum. The specialist said that because it wasn't effecting my quality of life to not do anything about it. He said the surgery outcome would have a worse result than my present condition.

And... Remember how fun an abused, arthritic joint can be. Slow and easy wins with shoulders.

I appriciate all of the responses! Yours sounds really bad! I do have a SLAP tear on the labrum. The doctor gave me a cortisone shot first and recommended more pt(for a month) but I have already done it for 3 months this year with little effect. SO, he assumes that it will need surgery and that it would improve the shoulder function and reduce pain once completed. I guess I will just have to take it easy for a while..

I just had this done. I had a full labral rebuild and a capsular shift. i was out for about 8 weeks. 6 weeks - sling, 2 weeks - takin it easy.

DON'T TRY TO GET ON THE BIKE TOO EARLY!!!!!!

i lost most of my summer to my surgery, but thats a small price compared to ****ing it up again. you will feel pretty useless while in the sling, but it gives you a really good excuse for things, and people will treat you better at public establishments......

i hope its on your non-dominant side. mine was thankfully.

if it is on the right side (throttle side) id be even more cautious about trying to get back on the bike. i can take my hand off the bars if i get a little sore, but only because its my left.

the surgery is nothing to worry about. mine went very well, no problems whatsoever.

good luck.

Yeah unfortunatly it is on my dominant(right) side. I'm a volleyball player(injury from that) and I'm actually having pain in both shoulders but I figured it would be better to do my dominant side first. We will see how this goes :don'tknow:

And by the way...Rob doesn't just play doctor. He is a real doctor and also had shoulder surgery himself!

Thank you Doc!

I had a slap tear, impingment and arthritis set in because I waited so long to fix it. I was in a wedge sling for four weeks, then PT for 8 weeks or so. As all have said go slow and steady.
