Hi guys. I went to get my bike out of the garage for a quick blast before it got dark about an hour ago. when I turned the ignition on I went to move my lanyard attached to the key it came out, So the key was out and the ignition was on with the engine running. The thing is that my bike has only just rolled over to 20,000 miles which is pretty low really. Although I do a lot of stop start as its used as my only form of transport to and from work, to the shops and whatnot so the key is in and out a lot. I've tried lubricating the lock to see if some of the pins inside are stuck but no luck. I don't know a great deal about this so if someone with some better knowledge than me would enlighten me this would be great :D. Also anyone had this same issue before? Thanks guys. Dan

It sounds like the tumblers inside the barrel are worn out. You need to replace the ignition switch. You might just go to fleebay and get one off another bike with a key!

Do a search as you'll need to buy some new security bolts to reinstall the replacement switch. Getting the old one off will require some drilling and/or cutting also.

Search for ignition switch removal. Or grab a used one attached to the top triple clamp and just swap that out. Getting to the wires under the tank will take longer than replacing the triple clamp assembly. Bolting it on would likely take less than 10min. The wires, 5X longer.

This may not work on the UK bikes as they have a chipped engine immobilizer.
You will likely need the immobilizer unit and the red key for the replacement unit.
Which is mucho expensive.

PM me if you havent got the info on how the red key works.

Defo worth trying an auto lock smith. I have had this issue on a Kawasaki and the locksmith worked his magic to re-jig the pins in the barrel.

Good luck

ps found a thread with a member who had red key issues

Good thing our "International Liaison" is on top of things. . .

I started a section about pulling the barrel and going that route but found no service parts at that level so I deleted it.

Thanks Nelly!
