I was reading some posts about S1 versus S2 bikes. I gather that S1's are the 1st generation including the 05'. I bought my 05" 6 months ago with less then 3,000 miles and love it. In any case there were a number of posts suggesting that the S1 bikes had an issue with TPS..What is it? How would I know I have an issue with it? Thanks!!

TPS - Throttle Position Sensor.

Call your local Yamaha dealer, and give them your VIN.

If your VIN is within a certain range, they will swap it out, completely free.

If it's NOT within that range, it isn't susceptible to failure.

Cheers,
Rick

The TPS is an electronic device that goes on the end of the throttle shaft held on with two screws..

It relays to the computer what the position of the throttle is at any time so the computer can adjust the fuel, timing etc per conditions.

If it is under re-call, no matter how old, its a safety issue and will be replaced for free at a Yamaha dealership. Figure 30-45 minutes...

30-45 min? they had mine for 13 days.... I WENT NUTS without her :(

yes, tps=throttle position sensor
yes, yamaha recall, it should be listed in detail on the forum under technical.

you should also get them to check your blinker fluid while you are there, the reservoir is kinda hard to get to.

Installaion time isn't much. Waiting for part, perhaps a different story...;)

When the TPS went bad on my 2004, the bike started stalling at idle, and had some glitchy throttling. After replacement, throttle response was better than ever.

I have the same belief as Nasaman did, in that Yamaha designed a non-linear replacement part: New TPS Redesigned For Smoother Starts?!? - Page 4 - Sportbikes.net

Whatever they did, it works really well on my 2004. :)
