Re: I put Amsoil 10w40 in my FZ6 and it's a miracle...

When I raced I had my one and only sponsorship from a buddy who sold Amsoil. I guess it was better, all I knew is I got FREE oil, oil fitlers and Amsoil Air Filters. They were like a UNI Air Filter.

Re: I put Amsoil 10w40 in my FZ6 and it's a miracle...

Thanks for the link, I ordered 5 gallons to give it a try. I have 3 bikes to try it in, they are all just over break in, so I was looking for a synthetic for them. I'll let you know what I think.

alright i'm all excited about this performance oil too but can we hold the phone for a second.. did i read your post wrong or do you actually have three brand new bikes... if so i want some of whatever you are selling.

I paid about $12 a US Quart in Canadian Tire. They only sell Fram oil filters, which I know are a problem with our cars, so I used a Yamaha filter...if in doubt, always go OEM. ;)

I pay $5usd at wally world for a full synthetic oil that has a flash point well in excess of 400F. I've used the same viscosity in all my vehicles and bikes (with the exception of the 2 strokes). One of those vehicles (a Jeep) has been put through hell for 200,000 miles dirt and street. The oil gets changed in that Jeep every 10,000 miles.

Don't get me wrong, Amsoil is good but not better enough to warrant the additional hassle of getting it and the additional expense.

Yea, well my FZ6 is the oldest. It has just over 2500 miles since last summer. My XR650l has just over 500 since november and me new FJR will be ready for it's first change before the oil arrives.

I use the 20w-50w amsoil in both yamahas. I feel it is closer to what yam specs out. ie 20-40.

That's all I've used since they came out with 15W50 in the 90's Good or bad? I choose excellent....

Amsoil- I use it in the front and rear diffs on my '95 Suburban. They haven't busted yet after 200,000 miles. Good stuff.

Castrol GTX in the engine of my Suburban. Good too IMO.

Mobil 1 in my '06 Sonata and '07 FZ6. Works great too at 37,000 miles and 15, 000 respectively.

The cheapeast oil and filter money can buy at any given time?- Great in my '89 Cavalier with 322,000 miles on it (no rebuild, only problems since '89 have been oil pan gasket X2, head gasket, alternator and bodywork after a right-of-way dispute with a deer in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan in '95 ;)).

I've seen a TON of oil threads on many forums and they've all had good info on them but IMHO I think at the end of the day you just have to use what you're comfy with and can afford.

Or buy a Cavalier with the 4 cylinder Iron Duke motor. Them things were bullet proof from the day they came out. Before we moved to Kentucky my wife had a 1997 with roughly 150,000 on it and that thing never had a single problem, not one....

I decided to try Amsoil in my FZ6 for a variety of reasons, the least of which was Amsoil's hyped, self-serving advertising or the gushing, schoolgirl-like "reports" from Amsoil's most rabid supporters.
More importantly:
-It is "motorcycle oil". (Yes, I know.... ;) )
-It is a Synthetic Oil which has an almost mystical "snake oil" allure about it.
-It is packaged in US Quart bottles, 3 quarts of which exactly fills an FZ6 with a filter change.
-It's one of those "if you don't try it, you'll never know" things...I know all about Mobil 1 (great stuff for my Glock and AR15, btw... :D ) and other sythetic oils (I'm a former auto technician and Service Manager), but have never tried Amsoil before. I'm trying out all kinds of new stuff with my FZ6, like 4 cylinders, fuel injection, electric start and disc brakes, so what the heck...it was time to try something new (to me) in oil.

x2

I've not made the switch to Synth yet, but I'm strongly considering the SuperTech. Used to run Mobile 1 (great oil) in my EX250.

Though - pouring it in my pants didn't make me a porn star

Mobil 1 as a firearms lubricant?!?! That's a new one on me... wouldn't it collect more dust 'n crap, as opposed to a dry-lube like FP-10?

My company used MILTEC-1 for the most part. MILTEC gave us about 5 gallons and free shipping to Iraq. It takes a bit of time and effort to go through the application process, but once you are do clean up is an snap. I can see using oil, it would work fine, but it would attract dust. Afterall you dump CLP into .50's and 240s, etc to keep them rockin. And you get a big oily mess, only I think motor oil might be too thick.

MILITEC-1 - The ONLY all-purpose synthetic metal conditioner and gun oil

Heh heh...we're going a wee bit OT here, but let's run with it until a mod bounces us. :D
I usually use FP-10, and carry a little plastic "needle" bottle of it with me when I go to the range. My comment re: Mobil 1 was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but yes, I have used it on my Glock for IPSC and it's magic. I'd swear the slide cycled twice as fast. :p Bear in mind that "dust 'n crap" doesn't usually create a problem over the space of one day if you start with a clean gun.
Mobil 1 is our company's 'official synthetic engine oil' now that Mobil is owned by Esso (that's Exxon to you guys down south). Legend has it that more Mobil 1 is sold in the US than all other synthetics combined. That's a stretch, I think.

I got the free sample of MILTEC-1 from their website and it works great in my AR15. Our guys in Afghanistan are using it on their C7's (M16's) and C4's (M4's) with great success. Quite honestly, I hardly ever clean my AR, and just spray the bolt, carrier and bore with a CLP, wipe it off, pull the bore through, load up and start shooting.
My old RSM would rip me a new one.... :p
I guess we better return to our regularly scheduled programming... :D

I have used Amsoil before with great UOA's. I ran the TSO (superseded by SSO) for 15,000 miles in my Altima, and could have gone longer. I currently am running the XLF group III 5w-30, mainly because it was on sale at a local hardware store. I think it is a great oil, all of the Amsoil products I have used worked as advertised. Worth the money? If you use the products to their full potential (extended drain intervals), yes it is worth the money. If you are going to change you oil every 3000 miles, go with the cheap stuff and save money in the process.
