DAMN i was just working it out . . . .

so I give the explanation as to why it's 128 (and not 62 !!!) anyway . . .

You need to look at the larger squares made up from the single squares . .

1x1 squares - 62
2x2 squares - 41
3x3 squares - 18
4x4 squares - 6
5x5 squares - 1

Total Squares not occupied = 128

ARGH . . . . . . . . . . :eek::eek::eek:
 
I had been working it out whilst playing games with the kids, I even got my eldest daughter involved helping me, come back to post the correct answer and I was too late aaargggg.
 
For what it's worth I came up with 204 squares total. Did anybody else come up with that number in their calculations?
I can't remember how I got to the number of unoccupied, but obviously not correctly!
 
That's the figure I get for the total number of squares in an 8 x 8 grid.

1 x 1: 64
2 x 2: 49
3 x 3: 36
4 x 4: 25
5 x 5: 16
6 x 6: 9
7 x 7: 4
8 x 8: 1
Total: 204

Yep. That was my math.

I think you may have answered a different question: something like "how many squares are there on the board?" which is 204 ;)

but at least you managed to get you answer in before the question "closed", unlike me :(
