So I'm thinking that for instances of long distance travel and perhaps road trips, and for general use, I want to install a trailer hitch on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4D 4WD.

Uhaul has the following options available:

Hitch# Type Class Max weight Max distribution weight Finish Price
36260 Heavy Duty 1 1/4 inch Rec 2 3500 N/A Black $109.95
75054 Square Tube 2 inch Rec. 3 3500 5500 Black $139.95
26260 Regular Duty Fixed 1 2500 N/A Zinc $142.25
25260 Regular Duty Fixed 1 2000 N/A Zinc $149.95

Anyways, I'm thinking of getting a motorcycle carrier...either single or double (eventually a significant other will hopefully ride). This would be used for dirtbikes too...obviously a trailer is a good idea, but for a quick run out to the track, a single carrier would be economical and practical.

What size hitch should I look in to? This isn't happening soon, but maybe an xmas present to myself? Class 2 or 3?

FTW=For the win

I'd go minimum of a class III. Go class IV if your truck is capable of hauling that much. Never hurts to go too big (aside form your wallet).

Assuming your vehicle can handle it I would go for the higher class.

FTW = for the win

not to be confused with

FTW = F* the world

or

FTW = Future troubled Whore

Yup...looks like it'd be a heavy load though...I think once you get to a double carrier, it would be more economical to get a small trailer since you'll need the space for another gas container, another chair, bigger cooler, etc...

They have them on Craigslist for a couple hundo $.
