I have never proclaimed to be the wheelie king. Well not to you guys any way.
What I have learnt today is:
The wheelie is like a golf swing, just when you feel like you have got it........You don't.
I have been trying for a while (not religiously) but about 6 - 7 times a week to get it up (no viagra jokes needed, I got three under three don't you know). I have had varying degrees of sucess.
The things I know for sure are:

Dont even try to wheelie until you know by sound and feel where the torque is to get the front up.
Previously I was looking for a speed. 28 - 31mph seemed to do it.
Don't do it unless you are totally commited to having a go.
You actually need to lean back and pull the bars.
You do need to be very agressive with closing and opening the throttle.
You will require the sphincter control of a power lifter.
The first few times the front comes up you 5hit your self and throttle off.

Today I did my finest one yet. I was not looking at the speedo and had just filtered passed a stationary car. The road was clear and I wound the bike up. I don't even know what rpm I was doing. I quickly shut the throttle and snapped it open. and the front came up very sweetly. I had time to think (dont shut the throttle and cover the rear brake) I just kept it nailed. The front came up about 2.5 feet off the floor, it just started to get very light when the rev limiter kicked in. Unlike previous times the front didn't just smack the floor but smoothly kissed the tarmac as I slipped into second.
My friends today was my golf moment, my hole in one if you like.
I am buzzing and chuffed to bits.

Woo! Hoo! Well done Neil.

I built a new motor for my RZ350 one winter, got it broken in and took it to the track. I was heading down the pit lane and got on it like I normally did. All of a sudden all I saw was sky! Man I shut that throttle fast! I guess it was a good build.

Hi Mate my goal is to clutch it up. I just dont have the necessary skill or bottle at the moment. I am just trying to get used to the front being light.
I did try a clutch up once; it scared the brown out of me. THe front left the road like a teenager on a promise. I have heard many people say that it is by far the most controlled way to do it.
Your input and advise would be most appriciated.

Neil, if pulling the front wheel up is your thing why not make it easy on yourself and drop that counter down to 15T. Then, you won't need the back pack trust me. I try to avoid pulling the front wheel as it is hard on the front legs but the FZ6 has an ability to pull and ride out a low level wheelie that offers a great feeling when it happens and this is generally caused by road conditions around here. There is one place I go that shifting into second at about 13,000rpm is at a rise in the pavement and the FZ6 will hit that on the shift and ride an 8" wheelie for about 20-30 feet with a very soft landing on the way to catching third. Now that I really enjoy and the bike is dead smooth......

Good luck and try to keep it upright buddy because learning to wheelie on a street bike can be hazardous to your health and that of the bike. Dirt toys rock for this stuff........

Thanks Charlie,

I would love to do the dirt thing. Unfortunately where I live we are so over regulated. There are no green lanes availible. It really sucks, when we moveto Ireland a dirt bime is right up there on my list.

Hey Neil, do like we do, throw the dirt toys on a trailer and tow them 300 miles or more to a place where you can go balls out. How far did you say Scotland was? They got some nice open land up there. Some farmer would love to have the dirt turned up right????

That is a lovely thought. At the moment with my babies all funds ahve been diverted to land fill sites. On a serious note though, as we have had so much foot and mouth and avian flu. The farmers are very cagey.
I have a farm (local poultry farm) where I used to shoot rabbits for the farmer. He has not allowed me acces on to his farm for over six months. I follow the country code and respect local laws to the letter. My (dream) country living is getting screwed pretty good at the moment.

It's funny you say that, I've always wanted to ride off road but I didn't want to mess with hauling bikes just to ride when I can step out the front door and go for a ride. That is one reason I don't ride my mountain bike very often. I have to drive and then PAY $5.00 to ride. In TX most property is privately owned, goes back to the cattle days and the huge ranches, so there are "ranches" to go ride on now, Rocky Hill, and others, five bucks.

And to stay in thread, I could never wheelie on a bicycle either!

If I won the lottery, or not even that really. I would jus love maybe 3-4 acres of land to do my own thing in.
My Father in TX (hilsboro) has twenty acres and my brother and him have a track in the back yard. They also have thses bushes that my dad calls "Screw you bushes" Dad (is a brit so not using correct botanical terms. These bushes have thorns on them that would have Dracula worried. They are so hard that they will pierce a tyre (Tarr [charlie]) with ease. When I was there we spent more time fixing punctures than riding.
