 A Short Film About Zen

This beautifully shot short film alludes to a phrase by Robert M Pirsig, the author of Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance: "If the machine produces tranquility it's right. If it disturbs you it's wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed".

McLovin have you read the book?

"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M Pirsig?

I have a digital copy if you'd like, essential reading for everyone.

I would love to read it. I was actually thinking about starting a thread just asking what are some must read books about motorcycling, I guess i got the first answer. Can you e-mail it to me?

also, will the book clarify why this guys bike is leaking and then it works fine like nothing happened? is that supposed to be a joke?

It's a Triumph mate,
Don't worry about the leak. They all do that [Says Nelly Knowingly].

To me,
It illustrates the delicate partnership between a man and his classic bike.
Especially early Triumphs or any late 70's / 80's bike.

I had an old Honda twin that would lose power to coil when ever it felt like it.
It would also require regular points adjustment to start.
weekly fuel filter cleaning.
weekly oil top up.

It was such a pleasure to ride though. It got nicked and I never had a bike with as much soul again.

Ladies and gentlemen, for your entertainment.

I was most blown away when i found out the book was in fact based on a real ride, complete with photos, 12 in all.

There are a few places on the web with up to date info on Pirsig's ideas.

Lila is the follow on from Zen, no bikes i'm afraid, but a real continuation of the ideas for those who are interested.

I haven't read Zen yet, but I definitely plan on it.

I have read and highly recommend Tracks and Horizons. It's about a guy who takes a two year trip on his bike. He starts in Uruguay, goes through the States and then ships himself and his bike to Europe for the final leg of the journey. He rides an old Indian, but pretty much every part of the bike is replaced at some point in the story.
