    FZ6 troubles

Another quick test would be to follow the kickstand switch wire to the blue connector and short the two terminals with a wire or paper clip. This will force the bike to think the stand is always up.

    FZ6 troubles

If it was the run/stop switch it wouldn't run in neutral either. I think it's your sidestand switch since it dies when you put it in gear. You can put the instrument panel in diagnostic mode and check d20 for the switch operation, see factory service manual pages 8-37 and 8-40. If you don't...

Is This FZ6 Worth $500 OBO?

Looks like the stator cover took a hit and is cracked open or been removed. The coil is showing, it should be attached to the cover, ie if the cover was removed it shouldn't be there. Won't run like that. Look for cracks or holes around engine crankcase castings.

    Upgrading the Front End

Very good, thanks. Having a recommended "procedure" like that to start wth gives a good baseline until more experience develops. This gives me something to think about, racetech vs R6.

    Upgrading the Front End

Sorry to hijack a bit, but hopefully this adds to the discussion at hand. From a technical standpoint I get the 3-way adjustable cartridge R6 forks are better than even the modified FZ6 damping rod forks. But I'm not sure if I could personally take advantage of the benefits. 1) Would you...

    Upgrading the Front End

Sounds like the factory spec will work. Reply from All Balls copied below.

    Upgrading the Front End

All that being said, the question still is, does the factory ball bearing preload spec apply to the roller bearings? I emailed All Balls this question as I'm interested in switching to them when my factory bearings give out.

    Upgrading the Front End

Good point about factory torque and needle bearings. The "rule of thumb" I've heard is that with the forks suspended and centered you should be able to gently push the bars and have them fall to left or right lock. See here for a video example: https://youtu.be/dYUL4siK82o?t=10m48s I think...

    Upgrading the Front End

You mean adjustments to the preload (torque)? I've heard only good things about Racetech. Progressive suspension is another name that comes up sometimes. Springs and gold valve cartridge emulators from Racetech are on my list of mods to do. For the front end the mods usually go something...

are these front caliper pistons still usable?

If you run your index fingernail up and down does it "catch" anywhere?

Late Spring Trip planing PA WV and more?

Have not been on 33, but it looks awesome on google street view. Skyline I have done in a car. not on my bike. We went camping for a few days at Shenandoah. Its one heck of a drive. Prepare to take a long time to get through it. Lots of scenic points to stop and traffic runs pretty slow...

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

You guys rock, very good advice. Both of you made compelling logical points. In the past when I used seafoam I just dumped it in the gas tank. I never observed it up close. I went out and got a can last night and it does have a viscous oil like consistency, never knew that. Figured I...

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. This makes sense to me. I guess it comes down to risk vs reward. I'd rather leave the carbon alone than risk abrading key clearances. I decided tonight to clean the deck/mating level on the head and leave the valve area alone. The...

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

A good observation about the scoring, hadn't thought of that. I do have it off. So cleaning the valve face would ok? If I understand correctly, I need to watch out for: 1) Rotating the valves 2) Double checking all carbon debris is removed from the valve seat area so it doesn't get jammed...

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

Regular 87 octane. For the first 10k of the bikes life I usually filled up at Wawa (convenience store like 7-11 for those away from the mid-atlantic). I was a poor college student. Now it usually gets Shell, Sunoco, or BP. Working on cleaning up old gasket material from the deck and head...

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

As a point of reference, I would say the carbon build up on my piston tops was similar to this gentleman's. Advrider Link Edit: Maybe a little thicker actually. It was *just* barely thick enough that the recessions were starting to fill up changing the shape at the top. Just barely though.

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

Next is the head. I decided not to clean it since I don't want to disturb valve seating. First pic is with flash, second pic is no flash. All bores and cylinder heads looked very similar so I only photographed one set.

Engine Clacking Noise - Cracked Clutch Damage

Here's a few pics that were requested. I took pics with and without flash. Without flash is truer to life but somewhat blurry, flash over emphasized all the shadows but is sharper. These are after ~23k miles. Up first is the piston/cylinder. When FinalImpact request pics, I had already...

Help, engine sounds like a washing machine full of bricks

Holy hell. You know what would be interesting? A contest where the winning engine sounds the worst but can still turn over and idle on it's own. All kinds of sounds you could take advantage of to make a junkyard symphony.
