Glad you are relatively ok......the bike can be replaced but you cannot. Getting rear-ended is one of my biggest fears as well with commuting to/from work. Keep us updated on what happens with the insurance company.

Good thing you are OK tho. And am surprised myself that sidi vertigo boots were damaged like that. I also have vertigo air boots and it makes them question their durability.

glad you are okay, however one question you came to a stop correct? In the middle of a road? and it wasnt from someone turning. The fz6 has a 4 way flasher button! I run into this on the interstates all over the country and as soon as my foot hits the brakes when I see a stupid fast slow down My hand hits the 4 way button also. I have used it many times on my bike! Im not sure this could have saved you but it might have helped.... I notice on the interstates I have never almost been rear ended. lanes next to me not so lucky....

Wow. You're a luck guy to walk away from something like that with only minor injuries. It could've been much worse. I'm really glad you're here to tell us about it!

If it were my bike and the rear end got busted off, I wouldn't ride it, I wouldn't even consider it, but that's just me...

Here's to hoping that the guy's insurance company pays off fully without too much drama and hassle. Itemize, itemize...

And I wouldn't be too hard on the Sidi's. They did their job. The insurance company is going to buy you a new pair. Given the way that accidents occur/unfold, you have no idea how that hole got there (or do you?). That boot did it's job. And as someone else said, you'd have likely incurred other, much nastier, injuries to your foot or ankle if you'd have been wearing sneakers/trainers.

Thanks guys!

1. With only 3700 miles I'm too much of a noob and I wouldn't dare jumping on an FZ1 before I hit the 30-40K miles. I'll either get another FZ6 (or have this one fixed ... which I doubt more and more as the frame is damaged), get a KLR650, Versys or a 2009 Ninja 650r. Time will show but FZ6 is the biggest (power-wise) bike I would consider.

2. I did file that my jacket, gloves (brand new 2-hour-old powerlets  ) and boots are a toast (well that's exaggerated but the gloves are scuffed up and are missing stitches here and there and the jacket pads did their job). Strangely enough my helmet didn't hit the ground so I'm keeping it.

3. People on here and on another board I'm on keep on telling me these horror stories and that really makes me appreciate how lucky I got this time.

4. The bolt that is used to adjust the chain tension (?) on the swingarm - does it also hold the pivot that the rear tire is attached to? If so, I would seriously be afraid that the bolt thread might be stripped as the rear tire took half the hit. I really wouldn't trust this bike if they do end up fixing it.

5. A local dealer estimated that it would cost $4000+ to fix the bike provided that the swingarm + tire are fine (which I don't know how can you check without tearing the bike apart).

6. As for the boots - I don't know, I still would expect a $300 track shoe to perform better at a simple low-speed-several-feet-slide incident.

7. For the record: I did not come to a complete stop. Traffic slowed down to about 20mph (from 50ish) and as I was about to begin accelerating together with the other cars infront of me (about 4-5 seconds after the slowing) the car that was right behind me passed us on the right lane and the guy who rear-ended me said he was coming and could hardly see anything so he just kept his initial speed and started accelerating when he saw my shadow a few feet away from his bumper ... the rest is tire screeching and metal grinding noises. FYI I saw him in my rear view mirror but for some reason (very dumb on my part) I assumed he had enough distance to stop (he did but I failed to consider whether he will attempt to stop at all).

^^^ lol - light a candle at dinner tonight :D As much as I don't want to be an ******* to my beloved lady - I had to do so much maintenance on her this winter that I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that she will get totaled :)

I know I know ... I don't deserve her for talking behind her back like that :)

Lesson learned: don't buy Sidi Vertigos ... I don't wanna know what would happen if you crash at 120mph at the track.

Sorry to hear about your accident....glad your ok....with reference to your thoughts on Sidi Boots....have you thought what might of been, if you were wearing cheaper boots....

Have had 2 big crashes wearing Sidi Vertigo boots...in the first crash, my foot got squashed between a car and my bike...result, 3 fractures in my foot...but a relatively small price to pay, considering the considerable impact they & my foot took..

2nd accident was on the track....140km/h highside....this time i came away with a very minor chip in my ankle...

Considering the amount of scrapping on the Sidi Boots, i would once again say, that they did their job...

Just my 2 cents...again, sorry bout your bike, glad to see your relatively ok.

^^^ That's good to know - thanks for the info. I guess I just managed to slide on a part of the boot that wasn't designed for that (which to some extent is understandable - INNER part of your right foot is not exactly likely to get stuck between the asphalt and the bike. I just got kind of ejected and felt in a weird way). I do appreciate the amount of skin it saved but I guess I had a little too high of expectations from the boots.

From the photo of the boot you have posted, it looks like they took a pretty decent hit & subsequent flogging, whilst sliding, resulting in that hardcore graze....could of been your foot...in my last accident i came down on my head, resulting in a massive piece of gravel rash on the top of it, helmet cracked and destroyed...but i did not feel a thing...not even a bump on my head...

i reckon if your gear is totalled, but it has done it's job, saving your bacon...then it's good gear!

Wow - glad you are ok. What road was that? I commute 30 miles of route 9 each way and my eyes are constantly glancing at the rearview... SUVs and minivans behind me on that road scare the piss out of me. :D

It happened here

I spoke with a Commerce rep. and the moment they heard the bike is sitting in a tow yard he told me he will expedite the review/claim processing so that the appraisal should be done before the end of the week. I'll let you know if they will revive her or I'll get something new :)

If they total the bike be sure to pull the new TS seat off it and put the original seat back on.

You can easily sell that seat. Heck for the right price I might be interested.

Already taken care of :D If I end up with another non-fz bike, I'll sell the seat for sure :)

Just got a call from the insurance company - the bike is a total loss. I bought it for $3200 and I'm getting $5600 :D:cheer::rockon:

I've gotta give someone else a call to get reimbursed for my boots, gloves and jacket.

All in all - getting runover can be a pretty sweet deal :D
