Now if you commute in central london you will attest to the ease of riding in the bus lanes. Now it seems the Met Police, TFL and the bikers industry association have come up with a code of conduct. This I think should be common sense but then as we all know, common sense is not that common.


MOTORCYCLES IN BUS LANES - Code of Practice
1 We share bus lanes with other vulnerable road users, take extra care around them.
2 Be aware of pedestrians walking through traffic queues and at bus stops.
3 Look out for pedal cycles and give them a wide berth, they may suddenly change direction or position.
4 Pass cyclists on the offside only – Never undertake.
5 Always assume cyclists cannot hear or see you behind them.
6 Do not use excessive speed when using bus lanes or overtaking cyclists.
7 Do not overtake each other.
8 Watch out for other vehicles at junctions and side roads
9 Take extra care when riding alongside congested pavement areas
10 We are ambassadors for motorcycling, riding in a bus lane is a privilege that needs to be respected

It is mainly the pedal cyclists that are moaning. They do not obey the rules at the best of time.

I think this is a trial as well.

Each council around England can do what it wants. You have to look for the motorcycle in the bus lane sign. They do allow it in Birmingham.

In Sheffield we have been able to use bus lanes and some bus gates for a few years. It really is good, especially now we have bus lane enforcement cameras that keep cars out of the lane.

The places to be really careful are were bus lanes end or where left turns allow cars to cross the bus lane, car drivers will often push into the bus lane early without warning.

I find it makes my trip too/from work easier and safer, especially were a bus gate saves having to go round a couple of very busy/dangerous roundabouts.

You also have to remember not to go in bus lanes in surrounding town as they don't have the same rules.

Only our most recently signed bus lanes have the motorcycle symbol but we are allowed in all of them, many car drivers aren't aware of the fact we are allowed in the bus lane, so sometimes you get a prat trying to block you off.

OIC. Thanks. We just have the bus symbol or sometimes bus and bicycle symbol so I imagine it's not allowed in Southampton & Hampshire. I had a quick google and couldn't see anything about it either.

Think nearest to you is Reading or Bristol may add a bit to your commute though.

It's down to each local authority do decide.

In London The Red Route bus lanes are administered by TfL and these are the one we are allowed in.
The rest are looked after by the borough councils and they don't really like us very much,

Basically just look for the blue sign with the motorcycle pictogram.
