You're going need an S2 bracket at least. If your bike is naked that's all you'll need but it's helpful to have an FZ6N headlight harness otherwise you'll have a lot of extra wiring. When you convert you'll need to rewire the plug that goes into the S2 cluster. Just match the wiring diagram since the wires are the same color just push them out of the stock plug and color match. I had one odd quirk though, after converting the guages didn't light up and oil light would constantly blink since the S1 harness has 1 or 2 missing wires but otherwise it worked perfecty. You'll have to splice in power for the backlight.

For the S1 FZ6: The wire color code for the the oil light sensor is white. the schematic shows the sensor is an open or closed switch that would be operated using a bobber for detecting low oil level. That sensor goes to the instument cluster CPU which operates the oil level warning light. The cluster lighting schematic does not show a voltage source so I think the S1 cluster is backlit from the same voltage source to the cluster when the key is turned to on. The S2 may have a separate backlight source. I will look at and S2 schematic when I get a chance to confirm this.

I did some additional investigating through the S1 and S2 FZ6 schematics. The oil level switch on the S1 shows a normally open state but the oil level switch on the S2 shows it as a normally closed state. This would explain the active oil warning light when you switch to the S2 instrument cluster on the S1 FZ6.
Grounding the white wire on the S2 cluster, where the oil warning stops should confirm this. If you leave the white cluster wire grounded you will not have an oil warning light unless you modify the logic with a relay/ transistor circuit or install the S2 oil level sensor in place of the the S1 sensor.

The S1 cluster backlight is turned on along with the power from the key on power (red with white tracer), The S2 cluster backlight is a separate supply wire (red with yellow tracer). The fix is simple. Make a jumper from the red with white tracer to the red with yellow tracer. Now the S2 cluster will light when the key is in the on position.

Anyone know if swapping the oil level sensor is a simple deal?

Thanks for the info. Can I use any cluster year after 2007?

Looking at mine, it's located just below the oil filter, tucked up in the block.
It appears the header has to come off (or at least down some) to clear it..

The two wires, on the side of the left side crankcase cover, (that come down)-one goes to the side stand switch, the other-to the oil switch.. Just follow that second wire...

It bolts directly to the bottom of the crankcase..

Thank you Scott. So the only further confirmation to the normally open or normally closed condition of the sensors would be someone to measure continuity of an S1 and S2 to see if the schematic is correct. I'm leaning on it being correct because of the experience @orient had with his oil light.

I bought a S2 speedo and a 2007 wire harness. Is the black wire with an eyelet a ground?
The wire I see in the S2 schematic is black with white tracer. Your black wire may not show the tracer color but I'll bet that is a chassis ground.

You can confirm if it’s a ground with a continuity check. Don’t make assumptions with electronics
Very true. There is only 1 black wire associated with the cluster it shows a white tracer. It is attached to other black wires that are chassis (frame or engine) grounds.
It would probably be difficult to establish the continuity at the internal circuit board but you could apply positive 12vdc at the red with yellow tracer wire and touching the black wire to negative should light the cluster display lights.

I have a 2005. I bought a 2007 S2 speedometer and wire harness. I tried plugging in the harness and nothing is working or lighting up. Are the wire harness interchangeable? The connector plugs are the same. This was a wrecked bike that I’m trying to get working. It had no gauges or lights on when I bought it. Not sure if I have to stay with the 2005 Speedo and wiring. I like the S2 look and keeping the naked look. Bike runs fine. Not sure where to start with wiring problems.

I posted (#4 post in this thread) about the jumper you'll need for the backlight to turn on as well as what might be the reason the oil light might come on and a possible fix.

Test (key on) to see that you have + 12 vdc. at the red with white tracer wire and the red with yellow wire on your S2 cluster.
