    Oil height (or air gap) determines the amount of usable travel in the fork. By raising the oil height you create greater resistance in the chamber as the fork compresses. The sweet spot is an oil height that allows around 90% of compression under VERY hard braking. You can measure fork travel by attaching a zip-tie to the upper stanchion (fork tube) and measuring how far up the zip-tie travels from the wiper.

    If you raise the oil height too high you run the risk of having the fork hydrolock too early in the stroke. This can lead to a jarring ride, or worse, a loss of control.
