I removed the swing arm today to clean and re lube, when I removed the cat pipe found that it had been gutted. Exhaust, PCIII and air filter were on the bike from the PO.

I know I read where people were replacing with a de-cat pipe, and this may not flow exactly as good as a smooth new pipe, but if it was simple enough why buy a new pipe other than cleaner look?

Has anyone actually gutted the mid pipe themselves, notice any real difference?

I gutted it but gave it to a welder to remove the buldge so I created a straight pipe :D for about 5 bucks. Pretty big difference for me without a PCII feels like it lost a bit down low but gained A LOT higher in the revs, the sound is more meaty and my girl doesn't complain from the heat burning her feet

That's exactly what the FZ6 needs, even less torque down low.
:D

it is not that noticeable only in first and after that it just rockets out.

I'd like a mod that does the opposite. :D

If Akrapovic torque/power curves are to be trusted, their cans should
make things a lot better. Only problem is.. they cost a significant percentage
of the bike's value.
