The bitter White line

On a joy ride today I slipped inside the white line on a right hand corner as the line painted just didn't match the curve of the road and there was lots of blacktop inside the line. Yes, I opted for a smooth turn cutting to the inside. Anyhow, on exit of the apex I crossed over the line on the gas a bit and that's where the rear decided to step out a tad and kinda just keep going. Not lifting I let it do its thing tell both ends were in harmony. As a rule I typically never cross a line while leaned over as results vary, and this time they varied a good deal.

What I learned; stay calm, don't make any sudden changes and don't chop the throttle as I'd guess the outcome would have been unfavorable. Other than gravel or other road debris this is the first time the S20 ever came loose on dry clean surface but it was the line that got it slipping so that was my doings.

That rubber paint is nasty. I went very sideways coming out of a Home Depot parking lot on the Fazer. If i remember right you were one of the guys who used to/still does ride dirt. It really helps in those "ahh-ah-eh, whew..." moments.

Those painted lines get ya every time! Glad this wasn't in the crash thread...been enough of those lately.
I had the rear slip out on me in a turn with Katie on the back while on the BMW. I guess I rolled over a small rock, I stayed on the throttle but almost gave Katie another diamond:BLAA:

I suspect the adventure bike thread nearly read like that when the black top turned to gravel and me flying over it at 45 mph!!! We're Goin in kid, hold on!! lol

just been in the escort for me Uncle's wedding this weekend on the fazer, was absolutely fine until the ride back, when the boom trikes my uncle and aunt were on decided that in order for us all to keep together on the 15 or so mile ride, i should block off all traffic at roundabouts etc. this was fine by me, until the second roundabout where I put the power down overtaking everyone just off the roundabout to get up to the next one, loose gravel and the back end slid WAAAAAAAY out. dropped the throttle back down to about 4-5k rpm and held her there, she stepped back in and I was on my way again. once you get used to it (I have some quite slippery battleax's - which annoys me cos they're usually pretty good) it's actually good fun :D

Oh yes, Katie noticed! With the bike being that big, it just went on like a tank. It did have the PR3's and I may give those a shot on my next full tire change.

painted white lines get pretty slippery when wet. I've had by rear sliding around on them when filtering, and spinning up when overtaking

Metal manhole covers are terrible for this too, it can be like riding on ice

That's the tricky thing isn't it, not closing the throttle when you use traction. It goes against all of your natural reactions doesn't it.
I have had a similar issue caused by a particularly bald stretch of tarmac with a sheen of water on it. A real bum puckering moment.

Glad to hear you kept calm and came through!

I had a pucker moment on a joy ride on Sunday, came into a corner too hot and with an oncoming car, survival instinct made me want to grab a handful of brake but instead I gave it light braking front and rear, stable throttle and full lean! New shorts were in order but mishap evaded! :D

I see now why the tail lost traction.... Most white lines are continuous and 100% on top of the highway with 100% fill, i.e. no gaps.

This area has continuous grove cut into the highway that is acting as both a reflective strip and rumble strip. The reflective filler is flush but its fill rate is 50% or less.

Be careful out there!

Sounds like a good time to put a plug in for Keith Code's book, "Twist of the Wrist II" where he describes the Survival Reactions - chopping the throttle, braking in a curve when miscalculating entry speed. Several others well worth reading!!
