The MotoGP World Champion is in the running for the 2010 Laureus World Sports Awards ‘Sportsman of the Year’ honour, which will take place on March 10 in Abu Dhabi.

Valentino Rossi has again been nominated by the Laureus Academy – which is made up of 46 of the greatest sportspeople of all time – for the 2010 Laureus World Sports Awards, which will be televised live from Abu Dhabi on March 10.

It is the Italian’s fifth nomination for the award – he was also a finalist in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 when Michael Schumacher, Roger Federer (twice) and Usain Bolt were triumphant. In 2006 Rossi won the ‘Spirit of Sport’ category.

Chairman of the Academy, former Olympic champion Edwin Moses, today unveiled the list of nominees. Seven-time MotoGP World Champion Rossi is in the ‘World Sportsman of the Year’ category, alongside FC Barcelona’s Argentinean forward Lionel Messi, Jamaican 100m Olympic and World Champion Bolt, Swiss tennis star Federer, Ethiopian long distance runner Kenenisa Bekele and Spanish cyclist and last year’s Tour de France winner Alberto Contador.

In the Womens’ category, tennis player Serena Williams is named alongside swimmers Federica Pellegrini and Britta Steffen, athletes Shelly-Ann Fraser and Sanya Richards, and skier Lindsey Vonn.

The Laureus Academy also presents world awards in the categories of Team, Breakthrough, Comeback, Sportsperson with a Disability, and Action Sportsperson of the Year.
