He has a brake pedal above the gear lever. The brake pedal itself is also incredibly short, probably half an inch?

That is value. I went to the Estoril GP in 2007 & from memory it cost me 70 or 80 Euro for a 3 day pass, although that was in a grand stand.

Foam inserts in the back of a jacket won't be much help in a decent impact.
