How many of you look for 7th gear?

I just got my FZ6 a month ago and I keep trying for a 7th gear. Not when I'm blasting at 135mph but just when I'm getting up to speed on the freeway and it feels like there should be another gear. Not much difference between 5th gear at 6000rpm and 6th gear at 5000.

Anyone else do that?

Guilty. The difference in rpm's between 5th and 6th isn't much. Sometimes I think there's got to be another gear there. Hope I never find it.

It could do with a Lo and Hi range. So when your blasting around town you could use Lo and then on the open roads you could use Hi.

i always used to until i got use to the bike, if it really bothers you though you could re gear the bike via the sprockets, and make all the gears taller, but you would lose some low range.

Yep, that's to be expected on a bike you're just getting to know. My '06 definitely had me searching for another gear early on. I even tried more than once the first time I had it on the freeway. 7-8k rpm seems high for cruising when you’re not used to it..

I didn't as much on the '05 FZ6 as I do now on the '08! Even though Yamaha says the gear ratios are the same, SOMETHING changed!!! The new bike feels a lot shorter in the gears!

different FI map? it is smoother through the curve and gets to the top of the gears quicker?

Yup, guilty as charged...I really did it alot when I first got the bike, less now. But every once in a while I'll look for 7th. I wish 6th was just a bit taller.

I've been pondering the same thing. We know the maps are different as well as the TPS design due to past issues. This model feels like it's at higher RPMs when compared to my '05 in the same gear and speed.

Maybe it's also the O2 sensor and the fact that this bikes learns to adjust now, especially above 7K. The '05 was hard coded throughout the map thus performed the same each and every time out.

I look for 7th when I actually wish they had made the FZ6 with 4.

Second is a waste of time and so is fifth.

They must think were going to take Everest on.

I don't agree that 2nd is a "waste of time"....I'd say that 1st is more of a "waste of time" personally. :)
Curiously, I find myself trying for a 7th gear more often since installing the Scorpions.
I now gently lift up the shifter without closing the throttle if I'm not 100% sure that I'm in 6th.....if it feels solid and won't move, then I'm in 6th. I think. :D

I now look at my speedo and tach before I look for 7th. If I am 5,000 rpm and 60 mph, there isn't another gear. :(

On a side note, does anyone know if Yamaha sells gear kits for the R6? They used to for the FZR400s and 600s. They were aimed at the racer who wanted to set up specific gearing for a given track. I'd love to have a 6th that is 5 to 7% taller.

I agree, I think first is jerky, and I sometimes just start of in second...

Guilty by the way, when I am on the highway, I always try to kick it up one more gear...

Glad to know I'm not the only one that looks for 7th. :D

What happened to the post from the guy that thought his '06 had only 5 gears? I really wanted to hear what he found out. Was it not going into 6th for him? Did he think it was a 5 speed and never shifted into 6th? That would be amusing. Or did he just not remember correctly how many gears he was shifting through?

I couldn't agree more, thats my baseline for top gear...

I wonder if the 07/08 models are the same??

ditto, I do it all the time, whats funny is when I've been on the freeway for miles then realize I'm only in 5th.
