Took a bunch of cars out for a test-drive to look for possible replacement for my Protege5 ( http://www.600riders.com/forum/bar/51523-theres-your-problem.html#post567058 )

My thoughts on each:

Accord:
I drove the 4-cyl 6sp. Possibly the easiest manual transmission of any I've ever tried. Soft progressive clutch and silky smooth gear box, with (as expected) relatively long throws.
Great, comfortable seat. Beautiful dashboard / gauges. Plenty of power, without complaining even at low RPM. Smooth over bumps without being overly soft.
Do I want one? Nope. Too much body roll and it's just dull. Great point A to point B automobile, but there's nothing it can do to make you giggle.

WRX:
This is the car I was pretty sure would be the replacement for my Mazda, mainly because I love hatchbacks and all else looks really good on paper (besides bad fuel eco).
Interior.. wow.. my 2003 Protege looks more up to date than this car! I'm guessing no changes have been made since 2002, when original bug eyes version came out? I can overlook dull interior if it feels perfect on the road, so off I go.
This car is MENTAL! NOTHING happens till 4k rpm and then EVERYTHING happens! Like a rocket goes off and you better know where you're pointing the wheels! There appears to be no immediate power ever, if you're full off the throttle. Even at high RPM (5k), if you fully lift your foot and get back on, there is noticeable lag.
Thousands of people find this car very fun to drive. I, unfortunately, am not one of them.

Civic Si:
LOVE the motor. Quick revving, high redline, peppy 4-banger! 201hp in a very light car with FWD and standard LSD is plenty to put a smile on my face every time I step on the gas. Gearbox is perfectly precise and clutch requires just the right amount of pressure to operate. Absolute pleasure to drive and exactly what I'm looking for in a fun car. Price is very reasonable too.
Very interesting interior with split gauge cluster, showing your speed way up at the top.. giving it spaceship-like feel. Here is the big issue (at least for me). Terrible seat! It's got way way too much lumber support and it's not adjustable. Feels like there's a big pillow jammed in your lower back. I really don't get this.. unless you're a girl unnaturally arching your back in order for your *features* to stand out, no one has a back shaped like that! I've found loads of complaints about this issue, but Honda doesn't seem to be listening.
If I were set on this car, I'd start by calling up local interior specialists and asking if it was possible for them to reshape the seat foam in a modern car (airbags could be an issue :don'tknow:).
The only other reason I'm putting this car in my *maybe* list, instead of *definitely* is the fact that it's not available as hatch. Can't beat functionality of hatch when you want to transport large bulky items.

BRZ:
I wish I had never driven this car!! OMG do I love it! Perfect, heavily bolstered seats. Perfect short-throw, precise gear box with medium effort clutch. Relatively heavy steering, as it should be in a sporty car. 200hp in a very light package. Not *fast* but plenty fast with fantastic growl as the RPMs climb. The best of it all: Front engine + RWD with LSD. Car enthusiasts know this combination is THE recipe for fun! Add the low-grip OEM tires to the mix and the tail absolutely begs to step out at any given opportunity! I started grinning the moment I drove it off the lot and my grin did not fade until well after the test drive!
Dash is very nice too, in a retro-ish kind of way. Wish it didn't come with standard navigation. I'd rather pay a bit less for the vehicle instead of that particular feature.
This is the sort of car that just might make me throw all logic out the window and just get one.
Things that make no sense (or simply stuff I dislike) about this car: NO elbow rest (immediately forgotten once you start driving). Unusable rear seats.. not even sure why they're there. A child would not be able to fit behind me and I'm only 5' 10". Somewhat small trunk (though the rear seat folds flat and provides a full-sized pass through, making it quite usable). Frameless windows.. loads of cars have them and they're OK most of the time, but I've had issues with Subaru before when it comes to this. One of the windows literally fell out

On the bright side, my Protege is currently performing better than it has in a looong time (following replacement of air intake hose). The car which I still think would make the most sense for me would be Mazda3 hatch, BUT.. the more powerful 2.5L version currently only comes with 6sp auto. Supposedly, 2.5 will be available with manual for next model year. For now, I can test-drive 2.5 manual Mazda6 to see if it's got enough *go* to make me smile. If it does, the smart thing would be to wait till next year.

... Stupid BRZ!!! ...

I've wanted to try out the BRZ - sounds awesome. Anyone know (besides what I'd guess about build quality) how it compares to the FRS?

And about the Subaru frameless windows - My mom had an outback for a while with the frameless windows and they never sealed that well - so you'd get quite a bit of noise at highway speed unless you tucked a couple of coasters between the mirror and the window.

Same here @ windows. 2005 Outback. Poor seal + noise + one fell out!! (fixed it myself by taking the door apart. One of the nuts came off the securing mechanism).

The BRZ vs FRS thing.. I looked into it. They're nearly identical in terms of quality / parts. FRS does not come with standard NAV, but does not cost any less when it comes to true market value.

Both are just yot w/a Subi boxer transplant. Nice low C/G tho. Also, turbo and superchargers are coming readily avail so 300hp is easily reached.

Yeah I fully blame you for bringing it up in the other thread! If I buy one, I'll tell my wife you made me do it!

If I'm taking a hit for that, it should be nearly broken in by the time you hit Oregon and hand me the keys!  :D:D

Think of Mulholland Drive but higher in the mountains towards the North! I know some great roads.

What about the Mazdaspeed 3?
You get your Mazda 3 features with turbo and sport suspension.

And let us not forget the Pinnate ((ah - Miata/MX-5)!!

I'd do the Accord but in the 2dr coupe V6 EX-L. I have an older Acura CL-S and they're about the same car. 270hp makes that boring car pretty fun, IMHO. Front wheel drive and a big trunk. Fuel economy blows though - 25-28 mpg. Maybe less if you drive it like you know you want to.

Thanks Erci, you tested two of the three I had been considering as an (eventual) replacement for my beloved Saab 9-3; I do know now that I can't fit into a BRZ so that one's out.
Have you tried any of the sportier VWs? The Eos has my interest, and I do fit in it (plus, a hardtop convertible with a sunroof?!? Shut the front door!)

I like the GTI, in terms of looks and on paper. Have not driven one. To be honest, I wouldn't buy one as a possible 10-year keeper. Plenty of people love them and have no issues with them, but just as many DO have all kinds of electrical problems. I plan to stick with Japanese or Korean.
Something tells me I won't fall in love with GTI anyway, since I greatly disliked the turbo'd WRX. I think I need to stick with NA cars.

MS3 is out of production now. I'm sure new ones can still be found, but again.. if I disliked WRX, I doubt I'd love this one. Also really dislike the interior in those cars .. sea of plastic!

Audi? I had a '96 A4 Turbo Quattro, loved it! We drove the wheels off that car. Traded it in for a VW Passat turbo Quattro. Killer ski and bicycle race car.

It sounds like the vehicles you're looking at are lighter and sportier than the Honda Crosstour, but have you considered it?

edit: I just realized how expensive the darned thing is...

Looks are highly subjective and in my opinion that is one of the ugliest cars out there. Cannot drive one even if it's flawless otherwise

$$$.. I'm trying to keep it under 25k for a brand new one. Otherwise love Audis, except for the whole Audi = VW which makes me question reliability.

On another note, I towed R6 with my Protege today and it's pulling so much better now that I've fixed the air leak. I think I can hold onto it a bit longer :D

Re: Test-driven: WRX, BRZ, Accord, Civic Si + GTI and Mazda3

More car search ramblings:

Did a bunch more test driving last Saturday. This time I went with my wife.. she can drive manual now and I want to make sure we both like whatever I end up replacing my Protege5 with.

We drove Mazda3 (sedan, 6sp), BRZ (6sp), GTI (6sp) and Honda Si.

Mazda3: so very disappointing. I understand what they went for and I'm sure most people appreciate the new changes, but I greatly disliked it. Mazda3 is the new version of Protege.. 3 generations newer than mine, to be exact.
My Protege drives a bit like a go-kart.. loud, darty, raw.. most people don't like that, but I love it.
The new Mazda3? I honestly can't tell if the engine is on or not.. even when rev'd up it's barely audiblie. Steering, while not loose, is numb and disconnected (reviewers rave about it.. I have no idea what they're talking about). Perfect boring commuter.. likely more fun than Corola or Civic, but that's about it. It's off the list.

BRZ: I've driven it once before, but this was the first time my wife got to drive it. We agree on this one.. fantastic driving experience. Perfect steering, perfect ergonomics (seat, pedal placement, shifter placement and feel). Definitely a driver's car.
I have to admit it's quite gutless. The equivalent of Ninja 300.. fantastic handling, light feel, but until you rev it up.. it doesn't really move. I can live with it though.. probably better off (in terms of speeding tickets).
The downside: it's as if they've spend all of the effort on making it the perfect driver's car.. literally no effort on anything else. One of the gloomiest and cheapest feeling interiors out there. Limited is a bit nicer, but still does not feel like a 28k car inside.. more like 18k, if that.

GTI: This was my first time driving a VW. As plain as the interior looks in pictures, I was shocked by feel and quality of materials on controls. Incredibly nice. If BRZ feels like a 18k car inside, GTI feels like 38k. Seats are superbly comfortable with great lateral support too. Shifter is effortless, but precise enough (I prefer a bit more of a mechanical feel, but can hapily live with this one).
About the only thing I did not like in terms of ergonomics is the pedal placement. It feels like you're pushing straight down instead of a bit forward. Just something to get used to, but actually was a major issue for my wife, with her 5' 2" frame and her size 6 feet.
Another thing that shocked me about this one: having hated WRX's 4k rpm turbo *explosion*, I thought I'd hate the GTI too... NOPE. Completely different animal. Power starts to build from 2k rpm and does so much more progressively. Very nice pull.. much stronger than BRZ/STI. Handling is pretty good for a relatively heavy, FWD car. Good balance between luxury and sport.
Clearly the most functional of all the cars on my list, so that's another plus. I think I could be happy with this one.
Now here's the funny part: my wife HATED it :rof: she said it felt too soft, too rolly and it literally made her nauseous to drive it :O
I'm hoping she was just not feeling well.. can't write this car off. We're going to wait for MKVII to come out (this July).. 50 more foot pounds of torque! .. and 3 driving modes.

Civic Si: wife's first time driving it and this model was slightly upgraded from the one I've driven.. mainly loads more electronics and bigger wheels.
My wife confirmed that the seats are awful. She usually likes a lot of lumber support (I do not), but she agreed this car has way too much of it and after driving it for 15 minutes it becomes bad enough that I can't enjoy it.
I looked into car seat reshaping.. obsenely expensive! Neither of us like this car enough to bother with doing something about the seats. It's off the list.

Summary: I'd still rather buy a brand new Protege5 over all of the stuff I've test-driven, if such a beast existed :(

If I had to buy something today it'd have to be BRZ.

I still agree you should try the MS3 before you give the Mazda 3 a pass...I'd probably pick one up if my Saturn kicked the bucket...I test drove one and it has that raw mean attitude that you wouldn't expect from a 4 banger!

I'm surprised you like the Protege5 so much though, my sis has one and it put me to sleep all while getting sub-par mileage. I love wagons, that's why I was extra let down by it... It looks so sporty and quick but didn't deliver on any level for me (it is an auto though, so I guess if you have the manual version, that could be all it needs)

Have you cross shopped the Mazdaspeed3? I don't like how it deals with torque steer (reduces boost for less fun in 1st and 2nd gear) but it should feel significantly less pedestrian than the standard Mazda3.

The downside here is they put a cheap K04 turbo on them and most are need of replacement by 80 ~ 100,000 miles.

I found the 07 Mazda 3, 2.3 to be fun and sporty. Used to drive one for 3 years, but that vintage has a whole different look, different engine, and handles different than current production.

Currently driving a 06 Mazda 6, V6 3.0, 6spd TipTronic trans. It sticks in the corners well, rides firm with fairly aggressive damping control so on long rides it can be annoying but it really clings to the road. Even w/200 ft/lbs tq its more like the FZ with its happy spot 4k it comes on.

That said, I'll have to take a 2013/14 M3 for a spin and see if I get the same feeling. I liked the 07 - not sure about the new ones aside from the god awful smile....
